How much do you and your partner pay towards mortgage/rent each?

We own our house equally but I brought more equity in to it, so she pays proportionally more of the mortgage. Neither of consider relevant how much each of us earn.

We're getting married in a couple of years, and will probably merge our finances completely then and just pay in together.

Bought a house with the girlyfriend last month, split everything down the middle 50/50. Simple, logical. Earn the same (well we will when my new job starts in a few weeks)

Currently we live desperately but hope to buy a house next month.
Not sure how we will split the costs. I will be putting down about 50K more deposit than her but she earns about 40% more than I do, then again my salary is perfectly capable of pay for the mortgage by itself. Will probably just be 50-50.

The thing is you can try to be as equal as possible but if one of you looses your job or gets too sick to work then 100% of the costs are going to get paid by your partner it is impractical to try to keep exactly 50-50.

And if there is any imbalance in salaries then it is not optimal because you will pay more interest in taking longer to pay off the loan than if the person with a higher salary just paid in more money.

Our money is joint, it's OUR money, not mine or hers.

This (except in my case it's mine and his!) - we earn quite different amounts, but it all goes into one account and everything is joint. No concept of any person paying x or the other paying y.

What if one of you has more expensive tastes?

I don't see that it matters? When one of us dies everything will get left to the other anyway. As such, it doesn't matter if it's my money or his, or if we're spending it equally or not.

I assume in most cases any possessions and money would be left to kids... is the intention there to leave a note saying "Dad earned 65%, mum only 35%, and there's even less from her as she liked nice shoes"?

Might as well just lump it all in together from the beginning.

Joint account all money goes in and comes out one account. I bring home more than my wife however we've never seen it that way, it's a family income.

Mortgage is 1/4
Childcare costs are the same  slowly going down but very slowly.

Mortgage is in gf's name, she pays it in full.

I cover all bills and food.

I earn about 25% more than her, so it balances.

Wouldn't be keen on that!

Well I was in an IVA at the time, so couldn't be on it even if I wanted to.

Not that it matters, overall I am paying way less than I would if I were renting (or even house-sharing), for essentially my own place. :p

Delicate subject, never been in the situation where im sure id want to split stuff just incase of breaking up. I guess it boils down to the fact that if your happy together and really do see the rest of your life together, it doesn't really matter how you split it.

I used to pay most of rent etc, but missus landed a nice pay rise and now we are close to each other on salary so we decided to have x each month each for personal spends (GPUs etc) and the rest goes into the joint account to cover bills/saving for deposit.

50/50 on all mortgage payments, to keep things fair and simple if it was ever the case that we were to split up.

Other bills are dealt with when they are setup. It generally works out to a 60/40 split overall, but things like holidays, new furniture etc are generally brought by me. My wife tends to buy most of the stuff for our daughter, new clothes, birthday presents etc.

Overall it balances to a point that we are happy with. We talk maybe once or twice a year about who is paying what and adjust accordingly, but the mortgage is always 50/50.

I have always been 50/50 until recently.

I offered to pay more of the costs to increase my wifes disposable income.

I have the money to buy my computer part, mountain bike stuff etc but she was a bit tight each month.

I increased the amount i pay into our joint account each month and she decreased the amount she pays.

We have separate accounts and a joint account that all living related costs come out of.

We spend roughly the same on other stuff, she pays for a food shop i pay for takeaways and petrol. I pay all Car related costs etc.

That's changing the living arrangements though as not many people will have children born outside of wedlock, and wedlock changes the legal perspective on it all anyway.

Not really. Your type of ownership is agreed when you buy the house to be either tenancy in common or beneficial joint tenancy.

In the former it's specified that you each own a specific percentage of the property, based on whatever criteria you want. in the latter you act together as a single owner.

Getting married doesn't change this, you would need to sever the joint tenancy or inform the land registry (and each other) in writing that you'd want the deeds to show a tenancy in common.

Mortgage and Bills come to about £1300. I pay £1300 in, she pays £800. we are both left with approximately the same disposable income in our own accounts after that to spend on ourselves (she earns more pro-rata but only works 4 days a week so she can spend an extra day at home with our 2 year old).

Looking to start overpaying the mortgage once we've used some of the savings pot that is generated from the joint account to extend the house and do windows, doors etc.

I don't really care about the sharing bills and stuff, so long as we can afford holidays, buy what we like, take our little girl out etc etc, it's not worth causing arguments over.
