how much do you need to spend?

As others have said, around 700 notes (assuming that is not including monitor and depending on how you classify "any game well").

Depends what your standards are really, what resolution you are pushing and how high you expect to be able turn up your graphics.

To get one that will play any game maxed out or very nearly maxed out (Metro 2033 springs to mind), I think about £1200 + peripherals.

Dave, theres tonnes of stuff on there that could save money.
For example, the PSU you listed is much more costly than one needs to spend, mainly because its modular.
You dont need a H50 to run games on high settings either, so you could save £30 and get an air cooler that will do the job to a similar standard.
There are also other cheaper cases that will easily house that hardware, and the motherboard you listed is very expensive and one need not spend that much on a motherboardto run an i7.
That leads to another point, an AMD set up will only have a negligible difference in game performance.

Of course there is, I'm just pointing out what I would want for running games to my standards.

Corsair make quality PSUs, that one leaves headroom for 5870 Crossfire in the future and modular is worth the extra IMO.

H50 will comfortably run the i7 at 4ghz or more, you can pick cheaper air coolers but they will probably run hotter.

The case is a personal choice no doubt, but I would want one with good airflow which the 902 has.

There is only one 1366 socket motherboard cheaper, and I think the Gigabyte is worth the extra as its a great board.

AMD is of course a valid choice, but again that build is where I would put my money.

It really depends on what you think "plays well" means, if you want to play games in 1920 maxed out then at least a grand. But you can still get a console smashing PC cheaper than that if your sensible, I prefer building a sensible specced PC as a challenge rather than just buying top of the range everything especially when it comes to the motherboard

Agree with this.
