How much does a half decent soundbar cost?

Very subjective with such a vague description of quality, what do you call 'half decent'?

Some people will tell you a £100 soundbar is half decent, others will say even a £1000 doesn't get you to half decent.

yeah subjective. plus once you start to spend a bit of money it might be smarter to look into seperates, as these offer upgrade / additional speakers path over a soundbar.

I think someone on here said they bought a soundbar but complaining the subwoofer isn't that great, it's a proprietary wireless subwoofer, so he's stuck..can't just add a better sub. Or can't add wired rear speakers because it's 2.1 only etc.

Although saying that parents sound bar is massively superior sound quality to the TV flat panel speakers- a bit lacking in midrange/midbass due to the still relatively smaller drivers. Sub is pretty good also once it's dialed down.

i am exploring similar at the moment. Generally a seperate system will always sound better, but can cost more at the lower price range due to needing amp/receiver (though second hand can help this).

I think the most important question would be how much space you have and do you have the space for separates or not. You can get wall mounted options to give the front 3 speakers in a tidy configuration, but this may not be acceptable.

Overall TV speakers are poor, they use small drivers with a low total power output. The focus is design and thin bezels and screen quality rather than sound quality. Nearly any sound bar will have a significant improvement, so they aren’t bad. All depends how much you want to spend, space available and how visible your speakers can be.

You can get 1080p AVR's for not much, as now they're obsolete. But if your TV has optical out, then that's one option. Then spend rest on speakers.
