Hi all,

I am wondering how much approx you guys think would be a reasonable cost for me to get a patch of rust fixed on the sill of a car which measures approx 10 x 20 cm in area?

many thanks if you can help

A tough one here. It all depends on how bad the rust is. If it's just surface rust, then not much at all.

Have you looked into doing it yourself?

I spent £25 today at Halfords on bits to sort the rust out on my car. If it works, great... if not, it's off to the bodyshop.

Where abouts is the rust on your car?

it's on the sills, under the length of the car, its only bad next to the drivers side wheel.

I have looked into it yes, I understand you need to sand it down, treat the metal in some way, then go about trying to paint it as best you can.

Here's what I have got to repair my rust (bearing in mind, I've had some of this from when I was repairing my first 214)...

Hammerite Rust Treatment Paint (either spray can or brushed on)
Sand Paper
Rust and Paint Remover sanding block - £2 from Halfords
Primer - Spray Can
Paint - Spray Can (I've found most of the Halfords spray cans are a very very good match)
A spray can of Waxoyl
Isopon or other body filler

Basically, sand/grind down the area. If you have to make a hole in the body then so be it. Get as much of the rusty crap out as you can.

Treat the whole area with Hammerite rust paint or Waxoyl. Give it a few coats of this, sanding lightly if you use the Hammerite paint.

Use Isopon, or another body filler to fill in any holes in the body work. Sanding down until smooth with the metal.

Treat again with Hammerite rust paint (not Waxoyl). Sand down until smooth.

Two coats of primer, sanding down after each coat.

Several coats of paint, sanding down after each coat.

Two coats of laquer, sanding down after first coat.

And that should be it. Definitely worth a try and isn't that time consuming. :)

Thats a hefty sized patch of rust for the sill.

Is it just surface rust? If you can put your finger through it, get it welded up properly - filling is just bodging :)

As long as there was some clean metal to weld to, welding it should cost less than £25 if you find a friendly back street garage. They should throw in undersealing it again for you.

If its completley rust though the sill you have to get it welded. Integral parts of the car have to be welded to get though the MOT. sounds bad, but get a screwdriver and prod the metal really quite hard then you'll find out how bad it is.
