The auto box has just fell to bits in the cav so gonna buy a new car was looking at a Passat 20v Turbo or IS200. But was wondering if there is any hidden costs in running a car with a turbo. I don't mean fuel and insurance but maintance costs. Does it make services more expensive, does the turbo need seperate maintance often or can it be left alone.

I have about £6000 to spend, i have been putting off buying a new car because the cav was fine but the auto 'box decided it was time to go and i phoned a gearbox place near me and the fella told me, not to bother because they are 3x what the car is worth.

Sidenote: I don't want a Mondeo, my pops has an ST220 and any Mondeo i could afford would look daft parked next to his

nope, turbo's require no more maintenance that your average car.

ok maybe some have more often service intervals, but that's about it. but if the turbo goes, then I suppose that would have to be taken into account..?

They potentially can need a bit. But if you have some tools there is nothing that difficult involved. Most parts are relatively cheap 2nd hand.

Do you desperately need 4 doors and the grandad image? Those two cars you mentioned would be somewhere near the bottom of my 'performance' car llist with 6K to spend.

Especially becuase neither cars are performance cars - the IS200 is a normally aspirated 2 litre 6 cylinder with what, 150bhp, which is capable only of getting the IS200 to 60 in an adaquete timescale, the Passat is merely turbocharged for efficiency rather than becuase it's a performance car - again, it's 150bhp and hardly going to set the world on fire.

You've picked regular cars here - is that what you want, or did you want a performance car?

Good point. Doubt I'd go for a petrol turbo car over NA if I were after a sensible 4 door at no more than 150bhp. Theres no point.

Hmm...Does anyone have any more info on the Lexus lump?

I6? V6?

If it's anything like the V8, it'll be massively overengineered and RIPE for forced induction and 8krpm ;)

PS: Just my luck they'll be made by daihatsu or something...

Service intervals may (should be) be shorter for a turbo car. Decent oil is required (fully synth) and may require the plugs changing more often. Turbo itself doesn't require additional servicing, but does require some sense from the driver. Let the car warm up fully before booting it and allow time for things to cool down before switching off (drive the last couple of miles without booting it is the most sensible option).

Recon turbo units aren't massively expensive either, so if it does fail it won't cost thousands.

My Saab 9000 2.3T has reached 242K on the original turbo and my 900 is currently at 236K and had the turbo replaced at 148K (I wanted to move to a hybrid unit).

What engine is in the cav?

The cav has a 1.8 in it.

Not after a proper performance car, tbh, I am only 23 and most of my friends have the usual focus, golf, fiesta etc so wanted something no one has got.

I quite fancy a saloon and i like small big cars (if u get me). I thought about a 3 series but far tooooooo common and i considered a sky hile mile saab 9-3 TD but was worried about the miles. So i want a small big car with a bit of pull but overly fast and a bit different to the usually graduate job lot. I know the IS200 is a bit common but i like and wouldnt mind the altezza one but not sure about imports

Different power outputs on turbos will be the difference for High fixing costs. Somethins like the passat which is a nice car prob wont cost anymore. But if you think of something like these Tuned Japanese cars like Skylines and 3000Gt's most of there power is made by that turbo, think of how much work that turbo is doing to produce that power. If i got that right lol Correct me if wrong (quite poss)

Dad's LS200 went like bloody stink. Got it over 60 and it was like a silent missile. Don't care how much horsepower it didn't have, it was still fast.

What and the VW Passat isnt?

If this sort of car is your bag, it's hard to better the E46 3 Series. Lexus certainly didnt with the IS200.

its a v6, and unfortunately a right pig to tune, lexus have locked the car down. even a £3000 supercharger conversion only gets you 30% more horsepower and a 0-60 of ~ 7 seconds.

It may be but none of my friends have them

Thats becuase you are young, and the Passat offers virtually nothing to entice the young, whereas the 3 Series is great. The Passat is a decent car, but for its cruising ability and build quality, which amongst young guys, is bottom of the list. At least Mondeo has its handling, BMW has handling and prestige, etc etc.

I may be wrong about the sales but i am sure it was mentioned on top gear

They compared sales of the 318i Sport to the ST220. The ST220 is exceptionally rare, the 318i is not.

Overall, though, Mondeo outsells 3 Series but only just.

Going out tomorrow to look properly as i need car by like Wednesday. I feel abit better now about turbos.

At the risk of being shouted down again what about the Volvo S60 2.0T i know its not a sports car but you seem to be able to get a lot of kit for little money.
