I know every little (is supposed to) helps, but I don't think having LED/energy bulbs all over the house helps much when you factor in their cost. It'll take several years for them to pay-back.

Not really.

Swap a 50w halogen bulb for a ~5w LED, saving 45w.
Assume 3hrs per day use= 135w/hr (0.135kw/hr) per day
0.135 x 365 = 49.3 kw/hr per year
@ 13p = £6.41

So it's more than paid for itself in 1 year.

You lose out on its heat output in winter, though. So may, in theory, use a little more heating.

4 bedroom detached house - 2 adults 2 kids. Similar kit to most people. tv, amp, computer, server, phone chargers etc etc etc.

I used 7100kwh last year June to June - so average around 600 a month similar to most others on here.

Main thing I need to change is the 24 halogen 50W bulbs that I have in my kitchen/dining room/sitting open plan bit at the back of my house. That should bring it down a bit in the winter.

Well i've averaged 17 units a day over the last 6 days and am keeping a close eye on it, I have however turned off my security lights as they had been on 24/7 apparently and are 2x 250w so think that could have been where the electric could have been being used. I always wondered why one set of security lights didn't have any bulbs in it and I think it's because it's a cheap fitting thats gone bust.

My consumption has been roughly the same for the last 4 years, until the meter man entered the wrong reading, which caused a near heart attack as apparently in 1 month i'd used 15000 units!! oh what a difference a wrong number can make!!

Quite a few assumptions there. Unfortunately, none of them apply to my situation. It'll take me between 5 and 10 years to see payback. (Assuming the bulbs lasts that long. They have a 5 yr warranty.)

Holy Crap Zulu.... Clearly Pot farming is paying well if that isn't a problem, At least that is one of the only things I can think of that would mean using that much electric.

Well, maybe not in your situation (whatever that is), but your original hypothesis was more absolute than being for you specifically.

Worth remembering there is a cost to filament bulbs too, and they don't last as long (For example, my GU10 halogens last around 1 year and cost around £1 each, compared with a guaranteed 5 years and £6 for the LEDs).

500kwh over the past month here.

All electric new build, no heating on, 42" plasma, general white goods, probably down to the timed 3kw boiler every morning.
