comparded to a seagate 160gig sata1 8mb hdd?

You should see an improvement with the seagate, but nothing mindblowing. I think it has the perpendicluar setup so data is cramped closer together hence better performance. To get max out of it obviously a sata II m/b that supports NQC would be the next step up.

Do need the extra space or extra speed. If you got cash to blow then raptor is the way to go. Very impressed with mine.

The nF4 controller on the Ultra-D is a SATA-II, 300mb/s, NCQ controller.
