hi guys

What sort of speed difference will I see with an AMD64 FX-53 chip in games.

My current rig

Asus SLI Deluxe
AMD64 3000+ (OCed to 2.1ghz)
2gb Geil RAM
Geforce 6800 Ultra

cheers

also is 3ghz possible with overclocking this chip the one I just got is a sledgehammer

Err, no. Not really is the simple answer for 3ghz and as for the FX-53 maybe...

Is your cpu a skt 939 or 754? (i'm assuming its 939).

How much is the FX-53 going for? 'cos it could be more feasible for you to jump upto a 3700San Diego and clock that a bit and you'll have a niec fast system.

So in short

1) Socket Type
2) Whats your budget
3) What do you intend on doing with your system, i.e. games, vido encoding etc etc...

I've had the FX-53 since November 04, funnily enough last night I increased the multiplier last night from x12 to x13 increasing it to 2.6ghz, didnt like 2.7ghz though, guess I'll have to increase the volts abit. . .

I woudnt really bother with the FX series anymore, waste of money if your buying at full price, if I had the choice between a 3700 or a FX-53 I'd pick the 3700 or maybe go the opteron 170 route. . .

Will try for 2.8ghz with my FX-53 this evening, if it keeps the tight timings in my spec just by increasing the multi, I'll be very happy.

to be honest I think the £250 would have been better spent on a dual core opteron.

As newer games will be optimised for dual core and the fx or single cores will be overtaken by the dual core counterparts in the performance stakes.

I doubt very much you will hit 3ghz with the FX53. While it is still a good chip, there are much better options out there now with the likes of the 3700+ and the opterons, and for £250 you could have had a virtual guaranteed 3ghz chip.

Ok, thats a very good start.

You would see a performance increase from an FX-53 over your current chip but I believe that single core is soon to be under performing in games compared to dual core.

If you budget is completely stuck to £250 then i'd say go with a X4200. Its a very quick CPU but if you can shell out another £70 or so, i'd strongly advice you go for a X4400. The 1Mb L2 Cache will make a big difference when you come into more "Demanding" games. The next upgrade from there will be your GPU...

In short.
- With you current budget, go dual core in the for of an X2 4200
- If you can spend a few more pennies, go for a X2 4400.

Hope this helps.

ok

1) 939
2) got it for £250
3) Games, games, games

The FX-53 will give you a v.good boost in speed over the 3000+.

You have gone from a 1800MHz CPU with 512Kb L2 cache to one thats 2400MHz with 1024Kb L2 cache.

:)

edit to add: ok so yours was overclocked to 2100MHz (overclock the FX-53 now too), even so its a nice upgrade.
