How much is a tailored suit?

I always hear the term 'cheap polyester suit' in films and tv shows, but I always just see a suit as a suit, I couldn't tell what material it was made out of.

Would paying £700 ensure no one would think it was a cheap polyester suit? I might need to buy one soon.

You can always tell a cheap suit. Just walk around a major city like London, or anywhere that hosts a ftse company. Those in well paid jobs who wear a suit look completely different to say an office junior for a newspaper :D

The key isn't the material. It's the fit. You can get away in a cheap suit if it fits properly. Still, a quality suit makes you look the business.

I just want a suit that fits nicely, abroad I can get a decent tailored suit for £345.

I'm not fussy about what suit to buy, I really like the navy type of colour suits. But some of my friends said to get a black suit, not sure... It doesn't have to be made from scratch, I even prefer to see myself wearing the suit and see if I like it before buying it. With tailored suits from scratch, you can't exactly do that... :(

Only wear black to a funeral

Charcoal isn't black btw. Light grey or navy is really nice.

This is the type of navy I would be aiming for. :)

As glen8 said, never get black - it's for funerals only!

An old colleague of mine (commercial lawyer) got his suits from a tailor that visited the UK from abroad maybe twice a year, each cost him £350-400 and took a few weeks to arrive after. He mainly did it because he was very tall, so pretty much nothing 'off the peg' would fit.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with finding your closest branch of Slaters and getting a suit there - they sell everything from £49 to £499, and will make any alterations needed free of charge. Tons of choice, so you can get something that fits well, in the quality (material) you want, and then get it to the right length.

Less of a faff than something tailored, and lets you see it before you buy!

Most I've ever paid was £350, I think, and I never looked out of place in a room full of lawyers who earned the price of your average London home every year (and more!). Got a few positive comments on my best suits over the years too. As long as it's a good material (i.e. not the £50 polyester suits Tesco, M&S and plenty others sell) and fits you, then it'll take a trained eye to work out where you got it.

just paid £800 for a full bespoke, had a shirt made.

www.dress2kill.com

Sam Rowley is amazing and the attention to detail was stunning.

Dress2kill also do tailored if you have a fairly basic body shape, £500 ish and still very very good.

while better than nothing that will never be a bespoke suit, I have normally needed 3-4 fittings for the ones I have had made

Just as well that the OP asked about a tailored suit and not a bespoke one then!

A lot comes down to the choice of material you make. For instance if you go in to a tailor on Savile Row you have various options:
Off the peg and adjusted
Choose materials including lining and have it done from scratch

Also you've not said OP whether you're going for a 2 or 3 piece. Also whatever you do get two pairs of trousers made.

Tailored with the nicest materials in 3 piece and two trousers is about 2 grand. Varies from tailor to tailor mind you. But once you go they'll get a feel for what you like and will have your measurements in a file so can make you whatever you want in the future.
I had one visit to choose material and chat and get measured, 4-6 weeks wait time then a fitting. If adjustments are needed then a third visit will be needed.

Having a 2 piece suit from scratch is prob about 1200-1500. It will last you longer than the three suits you'll pay moderate prices for in the interim.

The stuffier more traditional tailors on Savile Row charge more. Gieves and Hawkes I'm not a fan of as I think they're very expensive for what they are.

OP- depends on your style, taste and body shape as to how much you can spend.

Someone pointed out you can spend £50 on a suit and I'm sure you could spend £5000 on one. Have a budget in mind and shop around.

I can't imagine a £50 suit would be anything but nasty heh - the sky really is the limit though somewhere like Berluti will happily put together a bespoke suit that'll cost more than 99% of this forum earn in a year (possibly even combined).

My Grandad's Grand Mesure suit from Berluti cost him 6500 euros
