Apologies if this is the wrong forum but this seems the most logical.

So, I am looking around to see if i can replace my aging laptop with something I could do most of may work on. I see that there is the choice of 4Gb memory offered by Dell. Can 32bit Vista tal;k to all that much or would I need 64bit Windows?

vista 32 is pointless, just buy 64bit home premium, or business if you want remote desktop

Woah! That's a sweeping statement - it's not pointless if you want to run applications that either aren't x64 compatible or don't have an x64 version available.

it's like buying a 4pack of beer instead of buying a 24 pack

you'll need a bit more oomph to pick up the 24 pack, but it'll be worth it in the end, with the 4 pack you'll be thinking, damn i wish i'd just got that 24 pack*

*can't be type what i usually do :p

16-bit applications ;)

so.. any software written before 1993 then :D

Seriously.. 16bit applications haven't been written since NT3.1. I dare you to find 3 useful 16bit applications ;)

*edit* oh yeah.. get the 64bit version!

I believe there are quite a few problems with the software that drives these touch screens you see on high end HTPC cases when using 64bit versions of Vista.

Don't quote me on that though, it's just something I read briefly, haven't really looked into the situation.

That's about the only "mainstream" thing I can think of.

namely...... that you or any normal person might expect to use???

Serial>USB transfer cable for my diabetes blood glucose meter. No x64 driver available for it yet.

Bit of a sod really, as it was useful being able to give my quack a spanky looking graph of how well I was doing over the last year! No way to get the historical data off now until a driver's released or a new x64 compatible transfer cable's released (neither of which seem likely right now).

Coming (slightl) back on topic though: definitely see the difference from 2gb to 4gb (and more) on Vista 64. Makes it an absolute pleasure to use really.

Thanks guys. The laptops I was looking at are in the Dell Outlet and there are some with 4MB so I wanted to know what version of Vista is needed.

Anyone know if one can get a 64 bit Vista disk from Microsoft as an exchange for a 32 bit version just in case Dell only supply 32 bit?

No, MS won't supply you with media. If you talk to Dell they should give you media, they've done it for my housemate before :)

Sorry but you can argue all you like - Vista 32 bit is pointless, and a complete waste of time. Microsoft should have just spent their time developing entirely for 64-bit.

If you really want 16-bit programs, try DOSBOX.

I don't think it has hurt MS to develop the 32bit version, and I am sure it wasn't a waste of time from their perspective, as it has brought them $$$.

Take that up with the Makers of the Units, not Vista's fault :D (tongue in cheek) BTW interesting that you take you bloods so seriously, I havent taken a blood sugar level in over 4 years, just interested you could do that anyway, ho hum... hope me doc doesnt read these forums :D

It's not for people whose CPU isn't 64-bit capable ;)

Might install Vista on my Core Duo laptop. It's still a fairly fast CPU but it doesn't have EM64T. If Vista was x64 only then I'd be stuffed.
