How much of a difference does it make?

Hey guys, i've been seeing a lot lately about how Nvidia are abusing tessellation and things like it to give their cards the edge over ATI, but how much does it actually affect performance? Are we talking 1 or 2 FPS difference or more like a solid drop of ~10 when playing an Nvidia optimized game on an ATI card?

A £200 6950 seems ideal price : performance wise for me right now but I don't want to end up suffering because games i'm interested in (Namely BF3) are riddled with tessellation abuse and whatever, so is it worth splashing an extra £50 on a 570 or will it likely be not be noticeable?

Thanks :)

I'm running an i5 2500k @ 4.7, 8gb ram, gtx 570 and in crysis 2 I run everything at max with high res textures and v-sync, dx11 off and everything is fine.

Turn dx11 on and it doesn't quite run to a grinding halt but it's definitely slower, maybe near 20 fps. I don't know the exact numbers but you can definitely tell the difference :/
If I turn the vsync off, it's ok again though

I posted in another thread about a recent video talk with one of the co producers of bf3 when he was asked what graphics should people be looking at to run the game at max everything with dx11 on; he answered 'you'll have no trouble if you have 2x gtx 580's in sli' :/

Well thanks but perhaps I wasn't clear enough of my question :p I'm more looking for how much a game being optimized for Nvidia will affect ATI cards, not what a GTX570 can run.

oooooo. I would say it's probably going to be hard to judge in respect of bf3 not being out yet and I'm sure we'll see another big shake up of drivers once more dx11 games start getting released.

I'd go with your pocket and firmly believe it's not going to be catastrophic :D sorry I can't help further, I think it's just a bit early to tell
