How much of an upgrade would it be?

Hi all,

Been looking at the ASUS 7870 on offer this week (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-288-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411)

How much of an upgrade would it be to have this card on its own over my 2x6770's?

Is it worth the £200 or will my current cards do the job for a good while yet?

I don't play games that often but do like having the graphics set on high on the games that I do play.

i would say the 7870 will be better in most cases. Crossfire and sli scale well in some games and others they dont.

What resolution do you play at?

once you start getting to 1080p i would imagine that the 1gb of memory both cards are sharing will show performance decrease.

In some games there would be a big jump in performance, for others there'd still be a very noticeable difference, and that's before you even factor in overclocking. However, I think your cpu will be a considerable bottleneck to a card like the 7870, so in your position I would aim for a new mobo and cpu first. It'll be worth it. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if your two lower end cards are held back somewhat by the cpu atm.

You could get a 7850 and use the money to get a phenom 965.

Wouldn't switching to an intel cpu and new mobo be a better option.??

At the moment there really isn't a compelling case for buying the 7870. It's £50 more expensive than the 7850, and only £40 cheaper than a 7950.

Either you're better off saving £50, because the performance of the 7870 isn't 25% better than a 7850, or the extra £40 for the 7950 gets you a much better card.

7870 is really not a good deal at today's prices. £200 is way too much.

Indeed and when you have silly 7850 oc models that are selling filling up the price void board partners might not want to sell any 7870's lower.
