How much of your monthly internet usage do you use?

I'm looking at getting a DHD, and there are two deals I'm looking at:

First is £23/m with unlimited texts, 500 minutes and 500mb internet usage

Second is £28/m with unlimited texts, 600 minutes and 750mb internet usage

Since the minutes mean almost nothing to me as I'll never use anywhere near that much, the main difference is in the 250mb monthly internet use, so how much of it does the average smartphone person make use of?

On a 24 month contract I could save myself £120 by opting for the lesser, but since I've never used a smartphone I have no idea how essential the amount is. If it turns out it is very essential, it's not a deal-breaker to have to pay the extra £5/m.

Bare in mind my main use for the phone will be more the app / download-based side rather than your basic phoning and texting. I doubt I'm going to go nuts with what I download (I assume once I've got the apps I want I'll only rarely get myself new stuff), but I'd rather not be in a situation where I end up using all my storage the first week of every month.

Also, does streaming video / reading emails count towards the amount, and if so by how much? I can settle for not checking my emails that much, but I will probably be using it a lot for youtube and stuff like that.

Thanks in advance!

First off, everything counts towards it, images, web pages, video, music streams, etc.

Unless you are going to be streaming internet radio/music/video or loading LOTS of extremely large and detailed images, you will be fine on 500MB. At home you will most likely be on Wifi that means you wont use any of your allowance at all, its only when you are out and about/at work (where you may have wifi anyway).

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Mr average uses just over 200meg of data per cycle currently, for the very large majority of people you will be fine :) People tend to do double in their first month though so just do most of it on wifi (and the same for any large game installs).

Just checked - 2547Mb last month and that is pretty average for me...
Luckily Im on the old T-Mobile contract where data allowance is a lot more elastic. They probably moan about 3-4 times a year, I bung them some cash and charge it back to work

I was meant to be on 1GB a month, but because 3 screwed up the start date of my new contract, I'm now I'm 2GB for the same price :)

(I had my new handset but the contract didn't change for a whole month, so I was using the internet before I had any net allowance and racked up nearly £40 on internet/downloads - contacted them and they said I'd been told the wrong start date and he wiped the bill and doubled my usage to say sorry - can't fault it lol)

But I don't use anywhere near that as I usually use it at home and that's always on the WiFi :)

If it wasn't for the WiFi though, I reckon I'd probably come close to my limit just by looking at all the pictures on the cases forums on here lol

I have a 750mb allowance and I usually use most of it. I'd probably use more, but I make sure I keep an eye on the usage and try not to go over.
