How much oil do I put in.

Oh its only a 1.2 Corsa, 10 years old and of no re-sale value, last engine had been losing coolant for 60,000 mile or so through the head gasket slowly. It always got me home though even after my lack of care. However I would like the refurb engine to last more than 10K.

If I'd asked where to get a car on credit I'm sure someone would have jokingly said Carcraft (which is funny if your in on the joke)

Most posters have given me good advice I think, trentlad and housey in Particular, a fair few others quickly told me not to fill it to the top. I'm sure if Fox had been here earlier he'd have helped too - has done in the past.

One of our customers RR Sport diseasel which went back to the dealer to have some suspension airpipes replaced under warranty. We had a look at it when he complained the engine was rattling and not sounding right...some numpty had overfilled it by almost four litres of oil, thinking the rattling he heard was it starting to run on its own oil :eek:. All that at a dealership too...

Clearly I know nothing of engines but it took about 2 weeks to arrive, probably straight out of a rear end W/O. Still I'd like more than 10K. My only knowledge of it being a refurb is the garage saying they'd get one and the receipt saying thats what it is.

Surprised you didnt get an oil warning light of some sort. The volvo puts a yellow one saying check oil when it gets about 1/4 of the way down towards min, and puts a nasty read one that says STOP CAR, FILL OIL when it gets down to the MIN mark.

Yeah tbh im pretty sure i over filled my car the other day
I might get a oil change actually as im pretty worried about it
I used like 800ml when it was abput 3/10 between min and max
 
I don't think I have a yellow light in my Volvo, about a month or 2 ago I took a corner quickly and the oil pressure light came on for a sec or 3. Checked the level and it was below the min, completely on the bottom of the stick, added 2.5 liters and it was just under halfway between the min and max on ( @ cold).

I can't believe the number of people, posting in a forum for car enthusiasts who would run their cars so low on oil!
 
No, but I don't know a lot about how my flat is constructed, but I still take every care to maintain it properly.

They even teach checking oil in driving lessons these days!
 
its not about being interested in cars.

its about not getting a £5k bill for not checking the oil really..

true if this is an old corsa or something the bill wont be as large but when your last engine went due to whatever reason, you'd think you's check up on the new one every now and again. true it wont be as religiously or vigorously as an enthousiast but still...

personally i check my oil every 1000miles or so.

They didn't in my driving lessons, anyway I did check the oil, I just wanted to be clear on how to refil it as I'd already added a litre with no change. I didn't know if there could be another factor in the low oil reading and that I was in fact massively over filling the engine.

As explained earlier engine access is a bit of a pain, if it were easier I'd check more often and I had no reason to expect low oil, Its not leaking it or burning it and no warning lights.
