How much power?

Hi,

I have just got another problem with Hard Drives corrupting/crashing/screwing up with Vista. As well as a new vista install, I am going to get a new PSU as I am currently using a 520w corsair unit on:

Q9300 @ 3.3ghz
4 x OCZ 1GB
Pallit 4870 Sonic Edition.
1TB Samsung HD

And I'm starting to think the power supply is not being reliable/overloaded causing problems.

So how much power should I go for? Especially if I decide to put another 4870 card in...

Would 800w be enough?

Thanks,

Dave

hmmmm...

It could just simply be another vista random death thing. But, in the past year and a half this is the third Hard Drive and the about the 4th time Vista has had a massive problem. My computer building friend who has a similar problem found it to be his faulty PSU.

Current vista problem is a corrupt clfs.sys file and BSOD at boot up. Came out of the blue. System restore/repair etc says it cannot fix the problem, hence completely new install... Although I am not convinced I will be able to do this without other issues.

From reading up previously, I was lead to believe min power for my system was about 500w, which is pretty close to my 520w...

did you use a psu calculator to get that 500w figure? As they always seem to be well over what you need to be honest. By the way how old is the psu?

im having a hard time understanding why it would be the psu. if the voltage is that far out of whack then surely it would be affecting other components as well?

you said youve had a few drives fail...what drives were they? what was your friends?

The two drives that have failed were both hitachi deskstars (deathstars lol)... This one is a samsung P1 (or something). (edit: also a western digital failed firstly)

What would be killing my Hard Drives then?
