Im in the process of trying to measure my patio and am struggling with the amount of sand I need

The dimensions for the area are 25m squared and we need 25mm of sand across the area how much sand do I need?

I have no idea how to work this out.

25m x 25m x 25mm?

(25 metres) * (25 metres) * (25 mm) = 15.62500 m3

That's a guess. Sorry if you buy so much sand, you have no patio space left. Or it's several meters taller than you.

This is technically correct, but i find it's better to do it swifty's way and just buy a few bags then you can make a good estimate of how many more you'll need once you've used them up.

a good bulk bag 1 tonne will go a long way and work out cheaper than small bags in the long run....bulk bag around £32ish-£40 depending on merchants

Buy in bulk, get it delivered. The bags themselves actually cost about 1/3 of the price you pay for a ton of sand! (the bags used to carry half ton)

It will be about £30-40 depending on what type of sand you get.

Whatever you do don't go buying these rip off 20 kilo bags.

You'll need a couple or so tons of the stuff I think.

@1602kg per m3

25 tons of the stuff??!

I thought that as well, a patio that measures 25m x 25m is probably bigger than most back gardens.

I think it's actually 25sq. m x 25mm = 0.625 cu. m, which equals approx 1 tonne of loose sand. However it will probably need to be packed down, so maybe a little more.

So as far as I can tell this seems to be correct however I now need to work out the cement ratio. Which is 1:5 no idea how much cement that means I need?

much appreciate the input

I just re-laied my patio at home but had to put down a solid sub base first and then morter the slabs in place.

In the end i used 3000 kg of hardcore MoT 1 for the sub base at a depth of approx 50mm. I used around 2000kg of sand and 200kg of cement for the morter at a depth of approx 25mm.

Area was approx 30 sq m.

Ordered in bulk from Wickes who did 860kg bags for £38-42 + £30 delivery.

This site has a pretty good explanation of how to calculate quantities needed etc. http://www.pavingexpert.com/layflag1.htm
