Hi there,

My girlfriend really wants the original white macbook. This is purely for aesthetic reasons, nothing else and refuses to get the aluminium models.

Anyway. What model should I be looking at getting? How much should she expect to pay for one?

What's your thoughts on this?

Cheers!

Think it will be harder to find a good specced mint condition one. Appear to be notorious for the cases cracking though i'm not sure whether Apple do any "extra" warranty on these such as replacing the casing out of warranty.

I would say about £400 as well. Was hoping to convince my missus to get one as well but she wants a red laptop :/

Is it definitely a good idea to buy of these last gen Macbooks? I don't know a great deal of mac hardware (I know enough) however... was there any known hardware niggles, faults etc?

I can't personally vouch for MacBooks but as they are laptops then obviously the main thing to go which will most likely need replacing sooner is the battery. I got a 2006 iMac over the summer and it works just like it was new, and haven't heard of any problems with it from my parents.

I would stay away from any that have the 8600M GT graphics as that's a known problem (even if Apple do honour a free repair for them).

I think the only issue I read about the white macbooks (similar issue with white iphone 3G/S) is you can get small cracks on the plastic where the ports are located on the body. It's more of a hairline crack on the surface of the plastic rather than the core plastic itself.

I'm not sure if it was addresed for macbooks, it was not on the old iphones. It might be work reading up on it or imspecting the item before you buy it if at all possible.

Just my two cents :)

Bought a 2008 white macbook for my mother a few months ago for £300 still had applecare aswell! Reading this makes me feel quite happy about that deal :D

edit: it did have a crack on it but apple fixed that for free

Is the crack caused by heat generated, cooling down, heating up etc? Or just general mis-use of the laptop?

Quite annoying.

It's shoddy material on the topcase along with constant contact when the lid is shut. The main points where the cracking originates line up with where the magnets are behind the screen bezel.

So over time, with the natural way people tend to close laptop lids (with a little bit of force) and the addition of the "snap" as the laptop shuts it slowly causes the cracks.

Apple have repair exceptions on these though, for multiple instances as well if it happens again. They did initially think it was a bad batch of top cases. Definitely NOT the case :p

The latest unibody Macbooks don't suffer from the cracks around the ports, shame they've dropped them in favour of the Macbook Air. Had mine a year with 3 yr Applecare - thankfully has been plain sailing so far. Wouldn't go back to a Windows laptop unless I was forced to!

Depending on spec, condition etc, £350 to £400 seems to be the current price range. That's what I have in mind for selling mine over the next day or so.

Apple replaced the whole keyboard under warranty when cracks appeared on mine. Plus a new battery when scuffs appeared on the exterior - the battery itself was still fine.
