Hi folks. I have 13 years 850W Chieftec (A135 series) and plan to buy RTX 3080. Will I have problems with it or is it better to buy new one with GPU?

The problem is is that even with a high wattage PSU from 10+ years ago, can it handle the spikes of the RTX 30 series?

I've never heard of the Chieftec series (it might be an OEM rebrand of superflower etc) but we just don't know.

I would replace it as you don't want to end up damaging your lovely 3080 over £150.

Cheiftec were very popular over 20 years ago, back in 1998 I almost purchased a server grade redundant PSU from them.

There the same company that made the famous Chieftec dragon case.

Electronics of that nature should last 20 maybe 30 years, but the issue is the outdated technology. Modern PSUs have much better digital control circuits, in-rush protection, general efficiency improvements etc.

Keep the old one as a spare or use it for something else as it should keep working for years, but to power a 3080 I'd recommend something more modern in design.

New PSUI trime, you're looking at a good quality minimum 850W unit now, personally I'd just get a 1000W and be done with it, were I building today.

A good quality PSU can last you a decade or more, I had a 12 year Corsair still going strong when I swapped it out (bit loud, not modular) - I wouldn't risk a 1K GPU on your old PSU.

I've just bought a 1200w Asus ROG THOR because it is a rebadged Seasonic, and in my opinion it is Seasonic or nothing. Is it overkill for my needs, possibly. Should I have waited for a ATX 3.0, maybe. Considering all the fire hazard concerns (which is why I believe not many brands have released them yet) and AMD ignoring the new connector this generation, I think I'll wait until they're confirmed safe. And, been adopted more mainstream.

All that said, to mirror others I wouldn't be risking my other components with an old, unknown psu. If it lacks the necessary protections, when it goes pop, it's likely to kill the rest of your system. Don't skimp out, get yourself the absolute best you can afford and it will be with you for the next 10 years.

Just clocked my Thermaltake Toughpower XT 1275W ' 80 Plus GOLD' is 9 years old. Complete overkill but it's from my brief stint in mining and served me very well.

Might be time to upgrade.
