how much to charge setting up a pc

I would do the work then offer it for free 'don't worry about payment' kinda thing. If he insists on giving you money then take it but don't give him any figures, he might give you more than you anticipated. That way you come across as a good bloke (doing it for 'free') and possibly get quids in. You might end up in the best of both worlds.

If he's in any way your senior i'd go the £20 route. Favours owed from those higher up generally pay more long term than another tenner in your pocket. If you're not short a penny or 2 do it as a favour, much more likely to get something back from it.

This.

Or do like a.hay says and do it for "free".

A pay rise means more than the extra £10.

I do rebuilds (with no data transfer) for 50 flat.

Depending on how long it will take you and what kind of data needs to be shifted - I would charge between 50 and 75.

If it's only a couple of hours work ask for a couple of bottles of wine and petrol money; if it's more than this then consider asking for a proper rate - if it's just an evening out of your time, surely it's better to get on his good side? :D

I think 50 quid flat rate is a good deal. I charged my mate about that for repairing his defunct OS and did a full clean rebuild.

Today I:

Backed up all videos/music/photos/documents on a customers drive to DVD. (5 in all)
Reformated then reinstalled
Installed all updates & anti virus
Put all files back
Created an image for the customer
Created a vista restore disc for customer

Charge.... £50. Really should have charged more. Even at that he sounded as if he thought it was pricey!

I've set up a fair few PC's for friends / people that live near by.

I've actually never asked for money, "just a cuppa please" :]

I've paid to have a guy come out a few times (mainly for work things) but he is fantastic, and charges 30 pound for the first hour and then about 15 after that, and then any parts you need or software.
