Hi guys,
I am doing a job for someone soon building, installing and maintaining his computers. He runs a dvd duplication business and is extremely busy. I will be doing the following and i was just wondering how much you guys would charge, firstly for building and fitting the setup and then he wants me to be sort of on call but wants to pay me monthly to do so and he needs a price.

Initial build from scratch will be

Main PC - from scratch - installing windows XP Pro
File Server - Built from scratch - installing SBS 2003
Print Server - Built from Scratch - installing XP Pro
4 DVD Duplicators 1-11 in size - from scratch

I will be building this all from home and then taking it to the site and installing in along with a new gigabite network. The Server will also be getting an FTP Server installed to enable people from all around the world to upload their DVD images for him to burn. There will also be various software to be installed aswell.

Ongoing maintenance
The will intail remote desktop maintenance via Log me in
Call out if hardware fails
up keep of each machine
etc

Hope you guys can help, i do small jobs all the time for people but this is the biggest job i have had to date

Ignoring the 4 DVD Duplicators 1-11 in size - from scratch

I'd just order the lot from Dell, much less hassle quality reliable machines and for a price you can't build them at.

Plus you can get a decent warranty, how would he react if a part failed, and you said sorry I have to RMA it.

What is the print server for? could a decent printer manage this for you.

So your helping someone to produce copied DVDs?

Haha nice!

Andy

Not all copied DVDs are illegal

I would never be on call for a monthly fee to be honest. Renegotiate a reasonable hourly rate is my advice

Agreed, perhaps a monthly fee inclusive of a certain number of hours, anything over that charged hourly? Gives him pretty much what he wants, without letting him take the pee and call you out every 2 minutes.

Depends on spec, I'd guess somewhere in the region of £600-£800.

File Server - Built from scratch - installing SBS 2003
Depends on the spec, I'd guess around the £2000-3000 mark (could cost a shed load more depending how much data you have and how you're going to back it up)

Print Server - Built from Scratch - installing XP Pro
Nothing fancy at all - £300?

When I looked at getting a 1-11 DVD duplicator for work it would have cost more to buy the parts and make it myself than to buy one already made. I spent £400 on the one we have (that was 18months ago now)

The PC from Dell is a fair shout but I'd never order a server from Dell personally.

he is not a friend guys i was recommended to him by another person who i did work for. I will go back to him about an hourly rate for call out that does sound better and i am used to that.

As far as building the machines go the file server is only getting SBS 2003 because he requested it, personally it is only going to be used for file sharing so i might try and talk him into win xp pro.

If you're getting a server, you're going to want a UPS also...

Have you taken into account the rest of the network infrastructure, or is that already in place? Switches, cabling, patch panels etc?
