If I wanted to get another phone socket up in my bedroom so I could go wired, how much would BT charge to put another one in?

I'm not too convinced about the powerline plugs.

I think they charge a standard rate for new installs, extension wiring and socket moving which if I'm not mistaken is £130.

and having another socket in your bedroom will just reduce your Bb speed. homeplugs or Cat 5.

Not necessarily. They can run a new socket off the entry point into the house then run all the other sockets as wired extensions off that. That's what they did for me when I had to get engineer installed ADSL 10 years ago.

That said, I'd still just run a cat 5 cable. Significantly cheaper and easier too.

Oh, It'd be a bit messy though wouldn't it?

Why would it be messy when the BT engineer would have to run a cable if your socket was moved anyway? No reason why you couldn't run a cat 5 cable outside the house then back into your room provided you have or know someone who has the required tools.

A phone extension won't help anyway unless you have a second phone line with line rental, modem and broadband charges. Extending an existing Internet connection from downstairs to upstairs is all about cat5/homeplug/wireless networking options and not telephone lines.

Cat5e is easy to route along skirting boards, in corners and under carpets. It can even be routed through Walls and externally if need be. It's the best and cheapest solution. You can get more than enough cable in any colour fOr less than a tenner.

Homeplugs are good if you don't want the wiring issues but power circuits quality and separation can cause issues.

the only problem you should have with Homeplugs is if you are different power circuits, this tends to only apply if you have had a conservatory installed or some other house extension installed.

i fully rate homeplugs!! if not, just run a cat5 network cable up there and screw a faceplate and backbox to the wall to make it look nice, you can hide the cable with a bit of capping or trunkin.

or what ever you want to call it??

I have an extension with new wiring/different ring main etc - and my 50Mb internet works fine - I get about 45mMbps on the other end of the house.

Even on extension leads and what not I have found hardly any degradation (20% max i'd say).

Get homeplugs - they are so handy.
