How much would you charge someone if you built a computer for them?

Free for me as well.

We're all on this forum as we find PC's a fun and enjoyable hobby. So being asked to choose and build one should be a delight.

usually i tell friends its free but if they offer me somthing at the end like a few drinks next time we go out or a £10-20 i dont mind that but most times its free

i have only done it for family, so its a freebie
but it can take a couple of hours, inc, installing windows, and with my family i have to install everything, antivirus, firefox, etc.....

Havn't had to, but i'd do it free for family. (would be happy to, even though they'd still get me something for it)
Friends, hmm, probs the same. :)

last time a friend even mentioned a new pc on a job i had specd it before piece time and gave him a rough cost, he BT the money in to my bank and now continually tells me how quick his 2500k agility 3 pc is... i did it for free because i love it and helping him out makes me feel good :)

Depends on who it is.
i would never charge money, however when i comes to mates the obligatory achoholic beverage would be expected as payment in kind at some point:p(in varying amounts)
family - nout
Mates - A few beers next time we are out.
Work colleagues - A case of beer.
some random friend of a friend - as above.

also repairs requiring me to come round to theres, will cost them dinner and a few beers as a call out charge:D

Say to them "it's £50 for the build"

If they don't flinch follow that up with ".........and another £40 to install the internets"

Unless they had very specialist requirements I'd just find them a pre built machine. If it's just going to be used for facebook and iplayer a custom build is OTT.

11.5% for a standard build, for everyone. Other payment plans are accepted but I got bored of finishing work and then people expecting me to work for free for them ****ed me off, especially when if I wanted my hair cut by my hairdresser friend etc, they wanted me to go into their work and pay.

There are a couple of people where the help/advice is free, they just need to physically plug it together, as the 11.5% is to cover a part breaking and my time.

I usually do builds for free, same with specking up etc. I generally however make them sit there for an extra hour so I can do all the cable management and maybe some overclocking. That's for friends mind.

£50 is a fair price for a full build and install of Windows and whatever else they want on there, In my mind anyway. If you look at places like *insert well know highstreet ripoff competitor here* their prices are a LOT more.

i usually charge 10% of the component cost for building it, ask to be paid in full within 30 days of receipt of the computer. if they fail that i charge 20% interest on that every month and after 3 months send the bailiffs round to collect back the computer... for a mate i only charge 18% interest...

nah, im only joking :p

Depends how close the person is. close friends/ family something like a few crate, others will depend on how much hassle the build was.

Pretty much this. Most people expect that if theres any issue with what you build, even months/years down the line, you'll fix it for nothing. Due to that simple fact, charge a fair price regardless of who it is.
