How much would you need to be earning...

Which bit of that do you want to lose?

The income tax?
The council tax?
The food?

Even if you halve that figure.

£750 mortgage
£200 shopping/groceries
£250 fuel
£100 utilities
£100 council tax
£100 car servicing and insurance
£50 sky
£35 mobile phone
£100 holiday money
£100 savings

Leaves you £400 per month spare to cover every other cost, to entertain yourself, to buy household things/consumer goods/clothes. That's assuming you want to live without kids too :)

This sounds about correct to me, i can't see why Fox is having an issue with fuel costs or holiday money, i can easily spend 1200 on a weeks holiday, nevermind two weeks in America...

Fox must be thinking about those last minute cheap deals to the med tbh!

But if a car is more important to you, and is a hobby, then its easier to justify more money on it. Many people spend £2-4k a year on holidays. If cars are a big thing for you, thats extra money for cars..

That made me think, we have spent just over £7000 on holidays this year

Depends what you look for from a holiday, My parents usually like to book a place in france for two weeks most years, its a chance for me and the current GF + Sister and BF to come out and chill out, last time we did this it cost my parents 2.5k just for the villa rental.

I could goto france and stay for two weeks in a field for 50p but it wouldn't have been half as nice as the above.

For me, I don't have a house to look after, I have a small rent to pay, I am single (through choice...cause I am selfishly after a new car!), I am unlikely to spend money on a huge holiday. On my salary this allows me to save a considerable % towards a new toy and also a house deposit.

Hence why I can justify spending £10-13k on my next car outright. £40k, I would have thought you would need a sustainable job which covers all your basic assets and usually this includes supporting a family.... so they must have a large salary to be able to do this?

I am in a similar situation as in I rent a place with my girlfriend, don't have kids, on an ok ish income and I would never throw a lot of money at a holiday as I like to see something for my money, so I don't have any problems paying out 10k for a car. If you compare this to my income its a fair chunk but I don't have a lot of outgoings :)

Thats just crazy money!

two weeks in france in a gite with ferries, petrol and living costs only came to around £750 last year!

Thats flights, hotel and spending money. Wasn't really a planned holiday so didnt take time to wait for specific deals or anything.

2.5k for the villa! Thats absolutely crazy! Theres no way that 2.5K on a villa for two weeks can be worth the difference over £300/week staying in an 3 bedroom cottage in the middle of the countryside.

If I had that sort of disposable income I certainly wouldn't waste it like that!

waste it?
it clearly does the job of chilling out the whole family allowing them to recharge their batteries.

How many cottages that sleep 6 (comfortably) are there for £300 a week in summer?

Infact i'm booked up to goto America this year for two weeks with 11 friends, we are doing the usual villa style holiday which when split between a few of you works out at a really good price :

£200 villa
£140 park tickets
£400 - 600 Flights
£75ish each for 2x hire cars
£1000 spending money (food etc)

And thats without thinking about other things or going ott, fair enough you can goto spain for £200 for a week but i've done that and it was rubbish compaired to doing it in a nice hotel.

Holidays cost money, i don't class it as flash or anything its just the cost of going away imho.

It would be impossible to say. I know people earning over 100k who drive in Fiat puntos and other people who earn 40k driving 20k cars.

Its all down to personal circumstance.

exactly

Some pepople such as scoobydoo69 are quite content to drop most of their income on their car and live at home.

Best example i can give, was the Operations Director of my last company. He was on the board of directors, reportedly had a 3 figure pay sum, but yet drove a tatty old mk 3 golf GTI. The warehouse manager, reportedly on not far off as much, drove a Peugeot 307 diesel.

It all hinges on what you want from life, so there is no real answer to the question of how much you need to earn to drop 40k on a car.

You and the wife... all Munchers figures are based on the curiously unlikely scenario of being a loner :)

Indeed, but i paid for all of it, she didn't spend a cent of her own.

If you want ot be pedantic though, that was £1500 if went alone for a weekend. Equally as much of an expense as £3k for 2 people.
You questioned £1200 for one person on a years worth of holidays.

Becuase you'd have done exactly the same things at exactly half the price had you been all on your own?

A holiday on your own is not half the price of one with 2 people - it's a lot more than that as most hotels are not appreciably cheaper becuase you pay per room not person.

I would have actually done more if i went alone and no doubt spent more money.
I know its not half the price, but for arguments sake it was still making your argument about £1200 pointless.
