How often do people try and access your email account?

So all of these attempts are not THAT alarming? Pretty normal? Worried lol, changed Steam/Paypal paswords and emails to my latest.

You could check, I always thought there was one guy fighting me to for my account all this time yet it's probably been a different person each time. In Hotmail you just go to Account > Security > Review recent activity.

Checked mine and I've had no one try anything on my hotmail account so far this year, that's as far back as I could check.

Been tempted to do this but I change phones often, and always forget to change over authenticators to a newer number before selling/binning/donating my old phone.

They usually give you one-time use codes you can save in an emergency, stick them somewhere safe / on your DropBox account or something and you'll be fine. You can regenerate more codes if you use them all up. Google, and I'm sure Microsoft, can also text/call you a code to login with if you don't have the authenticator app handy so you can add both your landline / mobile number for further ways to get in.

Basically use 2FA + lastpass to generate random passwords for each site. Not using 2FA for something like email is a very bad idea nowadays :)

Oh, and make sure you enable 2FA for lastpass too. It plugs into the Google one really well.

No login attempts on my email address, although I once had a message from O2 to say that I have ordered an iPhone, going to an address in a different city. It has scam written all over it, so I went into an O2 shop and queried with one of their staff. They told me to cancel all of my cards, so I did that, and awaited a callback from O2. 2 days later, I had a call from O2. Turns out the email was genuine, and the customer's email address was very close to mine and they typo'd it so that it was my email. Bit of a hassle for me though as I had to replace my cards.

Probably used to happen all the time with Hotmail which was hacked in the early days after Microsoft acquired it and decided to port it from FreeBSD.

Ever since then I have avoided Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo (or whatever that particular Turkey is called today) and discouraged anyone else from using them.

Hang on, OP has had his email compromised and locked out on multiple occasions and still hasn't enabled 2fa? Mental...

Does 2fa rely on your mobile having a signal or charge every time you want to check your email?
No. Most services use Google Authenticator or similar. No network required.

Never had anyone try to hack my main email accounts or my Hotmail account before or after I enabled 2FA. Bloody spam emails on Hotmail though!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

No idea but I've never had any of my email accounts hacked. Some Russian joker did get into my uplay account earlier this year and decided to continue playing my saved game of AC:O, which utterly confused me when I logged back in and discovered I had levelled up and was in a different part of the map. That prompted me to reset the password and enable 2FA and in-turn then check and enable 2FA on any other services I use (which were not already enabled).

I keep trying to set up two-step verification in my email but it never seems to work (contact not found/phone number not valid...).

I used to have a problem with one email account on my phone. I'd get a notification in the GMail app saying "Sign-in failed. Server Password has changed" or something like that. But when I'd try to log in, I couldn't. Then my password wouldn't work if I tried to log in anywhere. It's like trying to log in after getting this message would lead to my password being stolen. Turns out it was the app that was the issue. If I ignored this message, I could still log in on a PC and after about 15 minutes, the notification would go away.
