How often do receive dead components when upgrading?

Has anyone actually ever had a computer die due to age or simply getting old?

I haven't got my 486 SX 25 anymore but the 3.1Gb Hard Drive I bought for it for a staggering amount is still going strong, it's a bit slow and noisy though.

I've a 28k Modem that still works, used to play Quake 2 on it years ago. I have ADSL now though.

I have an old Duron 650 with an 8Gb Hard Drive that is still going strong too, although my Mum uses it now.

Yeah a lot of hard disks die after they get over about 3 years old. Lost count of how many I replaced but it must be close to 100. PSU's also let go when they get old either from the fans going or overheating in some way and that has a habit of destroying everything when it goes bang. Normally takes out the motherboard and if you're unlucky the HDD.

th the OP

do you wear an anti static wrist band ?

I've never worn one and have been in quite a few pcs... I see that it could have an effect but unless you are literally FULL of static I can't see it killing anything easily.

Out of interest, how many times have you had to send a piece of hardware back because it was faulty?
Every time when my brother is home and signs for the parcel - he has a habbit of opening everything to "have a look"; fondling everything whilst he does it.

I am sure he has a small Van De Graaff generator in his pocket because whatever he touches dies.

Humph. I could shoot him, but that just ain't cricket! :(

I had a graphics card, hard drive and motherboard die on me, mind you the case they were in had virtually no ventilation so they probably overheated.

Also had a CPU die due to my first (and only) attempt at overclocking :o

I have bad luck with computer stuff, i'd say at least 50% of stuff i've bought has been DOA or broken prematurely.

This laptop is the worse offender though, i've had 1 total blowup, fried everything in it, and 2 graphics card deaths, its crap.

Recieved a dead ti4200 from ocuk about 5 years ago rma'd it never got my refund even to this day cant afford to take them to court so...so have never bought any high value items from ocuk since am afraid to say.Have bought small
stuff like my tuniq tower recently from them.

I used to use a pc shop not far from me and most stuff from there didnt work and I had to take it back, luckily I was introduced to OcUK and never looked back.

Loads!

Graphics cards, Memory, PSU's, Motherboards, Heatsinks, Optical Drives, Cables, External Hard Disk Caddies, all DOA!

The only thing I have never had a problem with is CPU's :)

I think I have been quite fortunate in the past. I have only had to resend back an Abit NF7-s mobo, and my X850XT PE had a couple of the capacitiors left in the box when I removed the card. So quite good overall. :)

what the hell, cables DOA? What kind

Me. I've never had a problem, I had a PSU die on me after 2 years, guess it was generic.

none DoA, the psu that came with my sonata II started playing up after about 5 months, but lasted another 6 before it blew up :p
thats about it...wish i had something wooden to touch right now...

Think I was a bit unlucky as my first 'proper' upgrade (i.e. more than just gfx card/RAM) had a dodgy motherboard. My Abit BH6 was knackered.

My last upgrade around 18 months ago was also a nightmare - both motherboard AND cpu didn't work, although I've got a feeling one might have taken out the other. Took ages to get it sorted because of all the troubleshooting to start with, sent cpu back, still didn't work, then had to send my mobo off to holland etc.

Wish I hadn't bothered really as it was a bit of a 'sideways' upgrade anyway (s754/3000+/6800 -> s939/3000+/6800GT) and caused me a lot of hassle. And by the time I was actually able to use it, the graphics card had gone down by about £40 or so!

sounds like my 1st PC (well the 1st one i made myself) I'd just got my 1st job and instead of saving up i decided to build the PC in stages...bad idea, by the time it was finished it was worth about £300 less than what i had already paid :( , still using it to write this though...if i can get my act together it will be a C2D setup before the end of the year

touch wood I've been farily lucky, had a mobo recently that failed it was DOA, sent it back and was told it was fine, sent it back a second time then they agreed it was dead, so someone must have not bothered to test it properly the first time.
I've got a few boxes to open this weekend so I'll keep my fingers crossed that the mobo was a one off :D
