I grew up in the 60's (You know, that time of unprecedented universal prosperity that the millennials are always moaning about)
So the habit of buying S/H from charity etc shops never really went away.
The only clothes I buy new are work-wear.
I was married for the first time in 1961, aged 21.
But far from being in the habit of buying from charity shops, the only time I’ve ever been in them, was to donate used clothes, books, etc.
I buy a couple of shirts every six months or so, and trousers/suits when I feel the need.
I bought my wife a Nicole Farhi suit from a “Nearly New” upmarket store in Kensington Church Street, W8 in the nineties or thereabouts, it really looked the business, and earned me a shed load of brownie points.
I usually buy shoes if I’m in Madrid, or Lisbon, they seem to be roughly similarly priced to U.K., but better made.
If you’re ever in Rome, look out for shirts, they’re not cheap, but they’re very good value.
