As per title, I’m interested to see roughly how often people upgrade their TVs.

  • When it breaks beyond repair

On average so far mine has been about 3.5 years, however now I have a 65" 4k HDR OLED I don't see myself changing until something significantly better is out or it breaks. So this one should at least double the average.

When the tech changes are prevalent enough to warrant it, or it breaks (which has never happened)
<2007, various CRTs
2007 - 40inch lcd 1080p
2011 - 50inch lcd with led backlight, 1080p, smart features
2019 - 65inch OLED, 4K, HDR

1998 - Hitachi 28" 16:9 CRT
2004 - Phillips 32" 16:9 CRT
2007 - Hitachi 42" 1080i Plasma - Broke (red mist)
2013 - Samsung 50" plasma 1080p - First Smart TV - Broke (lines down the screen)
2016 - Sony 55" 3D LED 4K - bugs got in to the screen was replaced, replacement screen had broken internet connectivity so had a full refund and put that towards -
2018 - LG 55B7
(2019 - Sony XF90 55" - not an upgrade)
2020 - LG 65C9

I guess I don't have a set timescale, however I cant see myself buying anytime soon as the C9 has most of the headline features of the latest models.

A bit of a guess and averaging out, every 5 years, for the main room TV.
Bedrooms just get hand me downs. Our 40" Sony in our bedroom is from 2007(ish)

3-4 years seems about right for me but would normally be the best mid-price set on the market but this time I have gone for the upper end with an LG GX. I would like to think this will last me longer.... but doubt it!

Living room TV was a 1080p Panasonic GT50 plasma which was replaced after 9 years (it's now my bedroom TV) and my LG C7 OLED is now in the living room which was in my man cave (which now as a LG CX OLED)

Living room TV's generally last 5-10 years before replacing

my mancave has had 2 TV's in 4 years, but I'm hoping the one I have in there now will last a good 5+ years

In 25 years, I have owned 3 different TV's.

Started out with a 14" Matsui CRT that I was given. Upgraded that to a 26" Mitsubishi CRT hand me down in the early 2000's. Ran that until 2013 when I finally bought myself a 50" Panasonic UT50 plasma. I will run this until it eventually dies and I cannot fix it.

Still using a 40" Samsung we got for a wedding present in the sun-room and that will be there till one of the toddlers inevitably breaks it

Installed a projector in the living room so that's really the main movie, entertainment screen rather than a TV.

PC monitors in the office however thats a different story.. but then again im probably in front of those for more than half the day so I can justify treating myself with those :p

Did buy a wee 32" android TV for the bedroom at the start of the year though - but that was cheap as chips, about £150 new and does the job of being decent for Netflix.

I've had 4 TVs since 1998.
All upgraded to TVs with newer features, bigger screen & better resolution.

Current TV is an LG 55" Oled, which I've owned 3 1/2 years & is the first TV I've owned which has developed a fault.
Its not a fault as such which renders the TV unusable though so will probably stay in use for a while.

2006 or 2007= pioneer 43" plasma (Was in Living Room, Now a Work mate has it)
2007 or 2008 = pioneer 50" Kuro plasma (Was in Bedroom, Now in living room)
2018 = Sony 65" OLED (Bedroom)

Can't remember the years were i went from
Early 1980's = 12" or 14" 4:3 Black & White CRT :eek::eek::eek::cry:
Around 1985 ? = 16" 4:3 CRT

11 years is a long time to keep a telly but it just goes to show how far ahead the Kuro sets were. I remember the lx5090 and seeing casino royal on blue ray on it. Amazing bit of kit, can’t believe they stopped selling them!

I Edited it

4 tvs in the last 20 years

32 inch sony crt i had that for 9 years
42 inch Panasonic plasma had that for about 4 years the power draw was ridiculous good pic mind but wanted a bigger set.
47 inch 3d lg awful for sports had bad DSE I endured that for 5 years :(
65 inch sony xf90 current tv had since 2018 brilliant buy I'll be keeping this one till it dies.

Had a Panasonic 42" PX70 plasma, put that in the bedroom and replaced it with a 59" Samsung Plasma in the living room. That was unfortunately smashed accidentally so got a payout from the insurance company and had to get a non-plasma set.

Happy enough with my 65" 4k Panasonic I bought to replace the Samsung but the lack of HDR annoys me, I wasn't wanting to buy a TV at that moment in time but the situation required it. I may upgrade this one before it breaks but no plans for the near future.

I but a new TV whenever I feel like buying one and I can justify the cost compared to what I have at the time.

The problem now is I have 2 TV's, I used to have 3 and will be doing a garage conversion next year and going back to 3 most likely possibly and use a monitor as a fourth until I upgrade one of the others.

Bedroom TV is roughly 2 years old and the third TV I've had in the past 4 years for upstairs usage.

Living Room TV is 4 years old and I bought top of the range at the time in the hope I'd not upgrade for 10 years or more. This is likely now going to stay where it is until it dies thanks to garage conversion.

The new room in garage will require a TV and my choice is either massive edge lit or 55" oled.

I always budget around £1k for a TV and buy when they go EOL for mega savings. I have on one occasion bought a Sony refurb for £350 and sold it a year later for £220. Was a top of the range 55" model and I've never seen them price a TV like that ever again which is why I bought it in the first place. I likley could have sold it for more as phone was off the hook with enquiries but just needed it gone.

am struggling to work out why anyone would want/need to change their tv every year.

I agree but some people want the best and simply don't care about the money side of things.

Yes I know to other folk it seems alien but I've literally seen countless folk on AVforums who buy the latest TV every year.
