Hi all
just a quick question:
how often do you guys upgrade/change your pc parts etc????

i ask because got into PC gaming in April last year and since then i cannot seem to settle :)
so far i have had:
5 x Cases:
prodigy, cooler master silencio 352, Corsair 350d, Aerocool Avenger and now my new case - which i ordered last night

4 x Motherboards:
asrock z77 m-itx, Gigabyte Sniper m3, Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 and now a newly ordered Asrock Extreme4-M

4 x Graphic Cards:
Evga 670 FTW Sig 2, Msi 680, Asus 7970 and my current Msi Gaming 780

God knows how many fans i have gone through to try and find the right colour/noise level etc

all that in less than 9 months....

think its because i get bored of my cases quite easily, so going from m-itx, matx, atx and now matx cases. i then needed motherboard upgrades!

the Graphic card updates/refreshes were because of silly prices at the time.. but well happy with my msi gaming 780, does what i want it to do and looks good

so am i a freak, or do you guys change your components a lot???
i must be a shops dream :D

I go through secondary computers like theres no tomorrow, I have bought and sold PC's several times a week in the past!

My main PC though I don't touch as often. Had bits of it 3 years and have been through:

CPU - still have the original i5 2500K
RAM - 8GB Vengeance Black, 24GB mis-matched, 16GB Vengeance Black/Blue
Board - Extreme 4 Gen 3 Z68, P8Z68-V Pro
GPU - GTX480, GTX570 DCU2, GTX660 TF3, GTX670 DCU2
PSU - ModXstream Pro 700W, XFX Pro 750W (80+ Silver)
Sound - Onboard, Xonar DS, Essence STX
SSD - Vertex 2 40GB, 830 256GB
HDD - 1TB F3, added a 2TB WD Green
Cooler - Kuhler 620, H100
Case - PC-K62, 600T white
ODD - DVD-RW, Blu-Ray ROM, external DVD-RW
Misc - blue lighting, white lighting, black braid, white braid, several types of fans etc

Keyboard - G510, Choc Mini (MX-Brown)
Mouse - still got my Sentinel Advance

I might be changing a few bits and bobs soon. i7 3820, RIVE & GTX780 are all possibilities (I already have the RIVE), though I'm trying to leave it alone! :p

I built my current PC over a year ago and have upgraded it 3 times. I added another 16GB RAM, another gigabyte GTX 670 and a 240GB SSD all within 5 months of when I started. I haven't upgraded in terms of my system but more of Peripherals. For example, I brought a Razer Goliathus, Cooler Master Quickfire TK Brown, Vengeance Headset and some AV40's. (And 2 OCuK Mugs if that counts XD)

So far I've built my own pc 2 years ago, was pretty pleased but I knew I'd be changing some components, upgraded my gpu that summer, bought a monitor that christmas (well went half for it), chaned to a higher power (and modular) psu a couple of months later, with the hopes if going crossfire a bit later (which I did just after the summer of 2013), then just a week or two ago I finally bought myself an ssd (250gb samsung evo), along with building a nas to handle storage abit better.:-) (and I've already started looking into what sort of balance I'd need to have a decent quality watercooling setup) xD so while I may not ne as bad as yourself, its mostly because I have to spend my money carefully lol. All I.have ti.say is that, for me atleast, its a hobby,.I enjoy working at/on my pc, changing out components and seeing what effect it has on the overa system, and you cant do that by just building a system.and leaving it :-)

i haven't lost much in terms of money, because most items have been nearly new and have sold them on that popular online auction site for near enough, what i paid for them

got a box of various colour sleeve/paracord because in every case i have gone for a different colour scheme.
but in my original pc i bought all bitfenix alchemy orange cables. so much easier but far more expensive.. t
hink out of all the items bought they are what i lost the most amount of money on

i try to get 3 years out of a motherboard/CPU combo

apart from upgrading a GPU/ HD or something during that time

Bought a prebuilt 3 years ago. Still fine now. Although graphics card died after 2 years replaced by RMA. Also power supply died about 6 months ago. Also replaced under warranty. That's great peace of mind you get with ocuk.

And no more finance payments - yeehah.....

In the last 9 months ive been through 3 cpu's, 3570k, 3770k and a 4770k. 2 mobos, 3 ram kits, 3 gpu's. I seem to add new bits and bobs every few months. Next on the agenda is another gtx 780 and a new case. Waiting on the new phanteks enthoo luxe coming out.

5 desktops in 4 years:

2010: 1090T + HD 5850 (Now back in the house, stripped and getting fitted to a Fractal Core 1000, with a GTX 660 on the way and extra ram, going to be exclusively used for Linux testing).

2012: i7 2700k + HD 7970 (Sold on)

2012: 5800k + 6670 (Sold on)

2012: i5 3330 + GTX 560 Ti (Sold on)

2013: i7 3770K + R9 290 (Current main rig)

2013: i5 4670k + GTX 770 (Secondary gaming rig + Linux) Use this more often as quieter then the R9 290 rig)

Cleaning out the garage soon lol got boxes everywhere, have removed the 5850 and give it a clean and repaste, will keep as a fall back GPU.

1090T is being cooled by a H70 with newer corsair fans fitted.

Luckily the wife has not divorced me yet!

And this does not cover all the laptops l have had and sold on lol.

Phew.... not just me then haha

i asked because was speaking to a guy today and he said:
"you must be crazy, not only is it a waste of money (told him i hardly lose out) but all the work of sleeving cables, building etc would do my head in"
think i secretly like all the building, daughters in bed, wife is watching her usual crap on TV, i sit in the kitchen with bits everywhere and i love it haha

+1

The above is only a brief list of parts ive had. Ive got a stack of invoices/receipts from different shops, theyre like a thick manuscript for a novel. That doesn't even take into account secondhand purchases. Id probably suffer heart failure if i added up all the money spent.:D

my oc'd q6600 is still going strong, most games are console ports these days so no need for more:(

I agree, I loved building my rig. Never again will I buy a pre-built PC after the experience of building my own computer. :)

I upgrade when the time arises which will probably be around the 5 year mark for CPU/mobo and 3 years for GPU.

I bought a pre-built in 2010 sometime, then over the next two years I bought my current rig (2500k + 6950). The CPU runs most games fine even though it has seen two new generations (3XXX + 4XXX). The GPU has started to show some wear in newer games but still runs a lot of games reasonably well. I was planning on upgrading every second generation (so I was due an upgrade to maybe a R9 290) as I have seen the 7XXX generation pass by however I have changed my mind. I will most likely wait until next year when the next lot of GPUs from AMD/Nvidia are released.

GPU (ASUS ATI Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2GB) purchased in Dec '11.
CPU/mobo (Intel i5 2500k + Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3) purchased in March '12.
