how often do you upgrade/change pc

About one every few years now. I only upgrade when things start to get choppy and I have to start changing settings. There's nothing really ground breaking that pushes HW to it's limits like it once did. I'm sure that 4k tech will change this but for now i'm quite happy sticking to what works and works well. If people are upgrading from SB, to IB to Haswell then unless they are into extreme OC'ing, then clearly they don't understand the tech enough.
 
Cpu wise ive gone fx6200, athlon ii x2 220, i5 2550k
Mobo wise ive gone gigabyte 970a ds3, msi z77mpower
Gpu, gt610, gtx 660 wf, gtx 670 pe oc, 7970 lightning.
 
Not so often.
I'd bet the best idea is to put side panel window into your case and put couple Sirian Hamsters inside - show is guaranteed, no more time to be bored ;-)
 
Well I just agreed to buy a GTX780 w' ColdZero backplate at the end of the month to replace my 5 month old GTX670 DCU2 TOP. Damnit! :p
 
I do proper upgrades (CPU, GPU) when I no longer can run a game I want to run, or if PC gets sloppy (Switched from laptop to a desktop for this reason..).

Small upgrades I do for fun, like optimizing cooling etc. Though it's all done now.

I am almost ready to pull the switch on a new case just to get back to building.. but I am trying to resist.
 
Still running a Q6600 after nearly 6 years, I did look at upgrading a while back but when it came down to it there really wasn't a need.

Only reason I'm now looking at upgrading is I want to downsize and watercool (out of choice rather than necessity).

There is a tendency in the community to chase futureproofing or wanting to max out every game possible, which is cool but expensive!

+2 gaming is just something I do in-between builds/upgrades/fixing things that aren't broken *yet*

Next on the list, proper water-cooling. Just building some funds atm...

How often do I upgrade though? I add/change something every 2 months or so. Be it in my main machine, server or htpc. There's always something that needs more something :D
 
I very rarely game, but when I do I like to be able to max things out and enjoy the graphics as well as the gameplay. I may only spend a couple of hours a week gaming, but I am really into it during those hours. :p

The upgrading of the PC is mostly due to the fun of doing it and the fact that having a quick PC feels good. :p

I may not do anything particularly intensive particularly often, but I like to know that whatever I may want to do, the PC can handle it.
 
Every 3 years or so. Either I will upgrade everything in one go, or certain parts I need to, to keep my performance up in the games i play.
 
I don't like wasting money so it depends on the component and whether I've got a piece I am happy to settle on.

Processor is still an i5 760 and looking to stay like that for a while

GPU is GTX 460 as I can still run everything I want on it perfectly fine but I am planning on getting a GTX 870 when they come out since that will be a nice upgrade and will run my games with mods easy

Monitor is a decent dell one so no need to upgrade IMO considering how badly optimized PC games can be so if I was to get a 1440p monitor it'd be wasted on me since you've seen I don't keep my GPU at top end enough to run it on all my games anyway. Cheapest screen that is bigger and got better res would be £360 and I don't spend that much just on a monitor that makes me need to spend more on gpu's anwyay

Case will get upgraded soon enough, got a nice HAF 932 but I am too lazy to clean it out regular so will swap it out for a case with dust filters like the recent bitfenix shadow / ronin eventually.

Already had 3 gaming mice to try them out but not happy with any tbh so will get a new one eventually if I have some spare money. Keyboard works fine enough though.

Speakers and sound card I've got are fine and will do for me.

Depends on the component really but seems like I tend to get comfortable with a rig and just do up the GPU / casing / mice for general usability. Big upgrades tend to be 3 or 4 years apart or when it makes sense (waited for new consoles to launch before getting GPU for example just to make sure it trounces it since raw power means little when a card can still be poorly optimised for. PC's naturally win on power but a good PC bought exactly when a new console is launched will probably not be producing much better than that console in 8 years time unless you spend thousands).

Interesting reading the amount of upgrades people do in such a short space of time
New case turned up today haha (thanks ocuk) so i will be stripping my current pc later

Its deadly looking on this site as well, a price change and i am ready to change my pc again
 
I bought a pre-built system from here back in 2010, and since then I have upgraded the cpu, gpu, added more ram, switched from hdd to ssd, and added a couple of case fans. I'd like to replace the motherboard at some point and replace the stock cpu cooler, but I only get stuff when it's on offer and I have the money spare (as usually I have a pretty clear idea of what I'd like to get and enough patience to stick with it).
 
I find upgrading every year costs about the same if not cheaper over time than upgrading every 3-4 years but you keep up with the new tech.

I sell my parts whilst the resale is still high, and buy the newer tech.

I find it costs me about £100-£150 each year to upgrade most parts to newer tech, after 4 years I have only spent an extra £400-600 (Which is cheaper than a whole new high end system) and I always have the new tech.

Currently running a i7 4930k with R9 290x. When Haswell E is about I will sell up 4930k and mobo and upgrade straight away.

But this is only my upgrade path.

Some people like to get the most time out of the hardware. Everyone is different I guess. I find resale value is basically nonexistent after 4 years.
 
i try to keep it to a minimum these days but cpu's i keep for a few gens, gpu more often depending on what is released (though looking to the next gen of gpu's to replace my xfire 290's as soon as they are released, these can go in the mrs pc) everything else i run pretty much as long as it will last :D
