How over-specced are your work's computers?

Im using that for CAD at the moment...shockingly poor

i usually find that if you take a bit longer on projects and mention the fact that the reason it takes longer is because the machine is so poor, you'll get an upgrade.

Desktop hardware is FAR cheaper than man/project hours. And if you mention you could spec a good machine from an online retailer (OCUK!) you might get yourself something tasty on their ticket.

My hospital has splashed out on loads of Core2Duo HP Workstations and Desktops, most with 2GBs of RAM, entirely pointless as the only thing they ever run is Internet Explorer. Some even have nice Samsung 20" widescreen monitors :D

And solitaire! pretty demanding requirements i hear

NHS spending money on IT and not on cutting waiting lists shock horror!!!

in college most of the PC's are P4 2.6-8's recently upgraded to 2gig ram, onboard graphics no idea what chipset, and no idea of hard drive, there painfully slow, can in some rooms wait 10 mins to get fully logged on, oh & they run hot

mine atm
p3 (i think) 1.2ghz
192mb of ram
no idea on hdd

running 3 execel doc and 2 ie's crash the pc :D

win 2000 btw!
tester/programmer to lol.

best pc we have is a q6700 4gb ram 2x1tb (autocad designer for our products)

Dual core Xeon 2.33ghz, 3gb ram , 4 x 250gb wd RE's raid 0 (HP ML110 g5 server)
Currently sat with a brother dcp-120 multifunction inkjet attached and not even setup yet behind my desk. One of the perks of being an engineer/sys analyst/implementation tester is being able to buy in one off bits of kit to stress and benchmark.

Local Council and we've got all sorts, tends to depend on the department.

Most of my lot (IT) are running IBM T42s (Centrino 1.5Ghz, 1GB RAM).
Most other depts are running IBM Desktops (P4 2Ghz-2.66ghz, 256MB RAM) or T42s in standard trim (256MB)
Social services still have a pile of P2 350Mhz clone desktops upgraded to 256MB RAM, and some utterly horrid Compaq Tablets (Celeron 800).

In an 2k/XP environment there's no real need to replace a mid-range P4 box, just stuff in a decent amount of RAM. Much as I'd like an ThinkPad T61p with an uber fast CPU, FireGL and 4GB of RAM there's no need. I'd rather keep my T42 and get a 24" monitor!

Got a c7000 with 8x BL680cG5(4xQC,16GB&FC) for a test bed at the moment.. that's 128 cores.. the closest I get to techyness is doing it's cost-benefit analysis for the products.

We timed the computers in my 6th form computer area and they take around 10 minutes to become usable from when you login. They are truely pitiful; I don't know the exact specs but XP really shouldn't be on them.

To all you autoCAD users out there I feel your pain - our p4 2.8 are really slow running 2008LT even with 1Gb of Ram - and Autodesk keep making sloppy coded resource hungry 'improvements'

2009 only runs smoothly on my OC'ed 6420 with all the pritty icons animations turned off - just as well i use keyboard shortcuts ;)

Software engineer.

P4 2.2GHz
Some crappy HP mobo
GeForce FX 5200
2Gb ddr pc2100 (just 'upgraded' from 1GB)
60GB IDE HDD

Machine is running multiple instances of visual studio 2005, SQL DB, and lots of custom windows services and caches. Its rubbish, slow and takes an age to do anything!

Only good thing is that i have a dual monitor setup, but even then they are only 15" LCD's.....

Is there an easy way to find out a specification without installing any software? Can't get into control panel and Windows + Pause/Break does not bring up System Properties (the Windows key has been disabled for no discernable reason).

Not even "My Computer" then you should have under "System Tasks" "View system information"?

Prolly cant get to bios either?

At my last work place we had new computers come into the office with Core 2 1.8ghz, 2gig of RAM, 160gig SATA HDD and SATA DVD light scribe burners. Considering the network disable all optical and USB drives from being used. So the light scribe drive came home with me, went nicely in my HTPC :D

Nope, complete no go, it is in a further education college and they have locked the machines down fairly tightly or at least it is more effort than it is worth for me to try and circumvent.

I was just curious to see if anyone knew of a website that could perform an online scan of the computers hardware really.

I work from home for myself and think it is critical to invest in good IT infrastructure. I specialise in financial modelling so need to use Excel, bit of word and powerpoint. As such the pc in my sig and a dell xpsm1210 are completely necessary! Excel is super demamding these days. Nothing at all to do with games!:p

We need computers with as beefy processors and RAM as we can get for our work(currently running 8gb ram with some kind of quad-core processor, which works well enough). What I don't get is why we have 2 very nice graphics cards in each mahine when the most graphically challenging thing we run is the occasional game of Solitaire.

i have a intel E6600 2.4 ghz and 2gig of ram to do CAD and basic photoshop work.

up until 2 weeks ago my colleague had a P4 1.7Ghz with 512Mb ram to do the same stuff... boy did he struggle?!
