How poor is local radio

Our local ones are generally decent, though personally I only listen to 96.3 Rock Radio just now. Clyde 1 was an alternative with some decent football coverage during the season.

I've not listened to Radio 1 for ages as it just seemed to be a lot of R&B the last time I listened to it. I don't think much of the presenters on the station either.

Commercial radio would be LOADS better if:

1) They weren't all owned by big media consortiums like EMAP and GCAP. This means that they are forced to play a certain type of music or retain a certain type of "sound" to pander to the advertising demographic they are going for. Again, shows are sponsored so nothing controversial can be said etc etc so everything is great etc.

2) OFCOM stopped giving out frequencies like confetti and shortened the lifespan of the licences. This way, terrible stations could be disposed of quicker rather than having loads and loads of samey stations on at the same time. They market would be forced to be different / interesting to pull in listeners to still be able to broadcast. Either that or restrict the big media groups to having just one frequency each in an area rather than two or three in some cases.

Unfortunately they are just another EMAP station, and you can really hear it in their output. One of the most listenable ones though.

Around here Marcher Sound have just launched (although the site says they have been broadcasting since 1983, I have only just been able to pick them up here and saw an ad for them for the first time last week), you might be able to get it in Liverpool on a good day. Yet another GCAP station though :(

Branson needs to fight harder for these licences, he never seems to win them and Virgin Radio is generally better than EMAP/GCAP.
 
The problem is where we are in East Kent there is nothing radio wise - I can't get Virgin, XFM, Capital or anything.

Basically I have Radio 1-5, Invicta FM, Classic FM and KMFM - that's on my entire FM range, it's incredible. I usually listen to Five Live, except in the mornings as I can't stand that idiot Nicky Campbell.

Think I'll have to get a DAB for the car, to get extra stations. :(
 
Local radio in Liverpool is alright, been voted best radio outside of London a few times, Radio City 96.7 or Juice FM.
Dislike them both compared to Radio1 , really started to listen to Radio1 a lot more recently
 
Hate Metro Radio (local one around here) in general because the DJ's are quite rubbish, but Alan Robson's Nightowls show on the special events he does are great. Tends to take people to scary / haunted places and stuff, it's good to lisen too :)
 
Cambridge Q.103 is drivel, the breakfast "Showgramme" as they call it, cetainly not what I call it!

Mansfield FM is really dire, hate the way that when there is a major news story they always seem to find the most obscure link with the local area
 
Do your local radio stations have stupid 4x4 cars called "Black Thunders", I hang my head in shame but Q.103 does :(

Never found Power FM to be too bad, certainly no worse than Radio 1

Though the very local 'Southampton FM' or whatever it is, is dire

The Uni radio station plays some half decent music, but the 'DJs' are just awful.
 
Local radio I agree, not so hot. I listen to Planet Rock, mornings with Alice Cooper particularly :D

Yep, Essex FM.

The taxi's always have it on. I still haven't decided if Martin Day is from Dagenham or down the docks at Tilbury.
