How poor is local radio

A lot of local radio stations are actually the same. That is, the music is piped from a central source for non-call-in/request shows, as is some of the news.

Only the presenters and traffic bulletins vary.

Thats what I thought; as I live in one county and drive to another for work, the songs are the same but there is a time delay/jump now and again.

I'm not a fan of the radio; I only listen to it for an alarm clock; I've not found a decent mp3 alarm clock yet. Thats why my car as a mini disc player hooked up to a 10 disc changer and an ipod.... and the ariel on my car dont work correctly and its there for show.

Have to say my local radio station Wessex FM is pretty good, I find it more useful on the traffic reports. Seeing as i travel in the local area i get traffic reports on the roads which i use often. The big radio stations like Radio 1 can't tell me about my local area as they only report on motorways and large crashes causing huge tail backs.

Do your local radio stations have stupid 4x4 cars called "Black Thunders", I hang my head in shame but Q.103 does :(

HEADRAT

Yup, they do here (2CR FM in Bournemouth.)

Utter dross, though I used to listen to it quite a bit 8 or so years ago. Migrated to Power FM, though the signal here's not great, now on Wave105, which is ok, but another centrally fed one...

Radio 1 is only good in the morning and at night, the rest is rubbish.

Would you count community radio the same as local radio? Im a tech for a community radio station that plays all different sorts of music and has lots of interesting things on the go. We have just been granted a full time license by ofcom and are due to start broadcasting in autumn this year.

Which one?

"Wake up with Moyles go home with Miles"

What more could you ask for. tbh local radio round here isnt that bad well Radio City isnt all that bad

there isn't a decent radio station, you just have to save about 6 and flick between them, to find songs. Although Graham Torrington is funny when on night shift. On Bristol GWR and Plymouth sound (also on other local stations, but I can't name them)

Yup, we've got the thunder bike and thunder bus too. :(

X-FM Manchester is actually pretty good... guess its a slightly larger company overall though than most truly local efforts.

I end up listening to Galaxy on DAB. I hate all the local stations, although the 'Black Thunder' women are nice! (Always around town!) ;)
