Future build, specs (esitmate)

Intel Core i7 965 3.20Ghz (OC'd to 4.0Ghz)
BFG GeForce GTX 295 in SLI (x2)
Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme Intel X58
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 PCI Sound Card
OCZ Blade Series 6GB (x2 - 12GB)
OCZ Vertex Series 60GB Solid State
Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB SATA-II (x2)
3 standard SATA II drives (2x 500GB, 1x 640GB)
2 DVD RW/R etc
1 LED fan controller
9 LED fans
Multiple USB devies connected such as keyboard, mice, usb drives etc (Around 6 at most)

Could be an additional watercooling setup, although if I did it would most likely be an external system but still take it into account as it could be a possiblity.

Now I typed in this kind of spec into the PSU calculator website and it came up with a result of around 1100W, which I think is rather a lot, mind you this was with maximum load on every device but still. What are you opinions? Do i need a super duper power supply or can I save money and get something a little more modest.

Thanks :).

Corsair 750 or 850 will be enough, what PSU calcualtor did you use, I just extreme cal and it come out at 683

Since you have so many expensive component don’t skimp the slightest on the PSU, I would say a good make 1000w one would be good;
Corsair: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-012-CS
Or a Silverstone Enermax 1000w or similar (don’t know the exact wattage)

Ohh and the CPU; If you don’t already have it , get a i7 975 as it’s D0 stepping which is better for overclocking, or if you want to save money get the D0 i7 920 as there won’t be much overclocking difference, and it saves money.
You could be a “dare devil” and get a good 900/850W, but to be safe I would get a 1000W TBH

Thanks guys, I was under the impression that both all i7 extreme's had D0 stepping?? hence them being the 'extreme' editions?

and @ siumatfung, quite funny that actually that was the exact PSU i had my eye on! :)

+1 for the corsair 1000W

Also, I've noted that you put "future build", so I guess you havn't bought everything yet? If that's the case, DONT get the i7 965, get the i7 D0 920, saves you about £500 and can still OC to 4.0ghz. OCUK even do a i7 bundle (CPU oc'ed to 4ghz, mobo, ram, cooler) for £550!

I haven't brought a thing yet :) lol its all planning atm, I plan to buy this stuff at around christmas time, and I was rather hoping the NVIDIA 300 series will be out by then, so this is just a rough estimate :)

In that case keep an eye on the i5s, should be out by then!

noooo I don't want to buy mainstream things this is the first time in my life I will have some money to buy a GOOD computer :P I want it to last :) lol

LOL! Well, the thing about i7 is that it is rumours to only sell extreme versions after the release of i5, eg i7 975 and newer models, which makes future upgrade extremely expensive. It's your choice though.

Well, I'm not spending stupid amounts of money I just want to buy a decent computer that will last a couple of years, so if the price of the i7's go up any more then they are now then stuff it lol, im not paying stupid amounts of money just so Intel can be greedy ***** :) lol

Another +1 for the Cosair 1000w

As for I7 intel might be dropping the 920 with the release of the I5 and by sounds of it the entry chip for I7 will always be hovering about £250-£300. The prices for the chips shouldn't be going up thou.

It is rumoured that all i7 920, 940, 950 and 965 are going to be discontinued at the release of i5, so it only occupys the top end. Whilst the i5 is the "mainstream".

If your planning on buying you rig at the end of the year, it may be a good idea to pick up a i7 920 now, £215 ain't bad at all. By December the cheapest i7 available will be the 960 and that's gonna be at least £400 and likely overclock no better than a d0 920.

If you want to wait for the new graphics cards - you could always build the rig now and get a £145 HD 4890 - just sell it in December and replace with g300.

+1 for Corsair 1000W, got mine and it's great, no probs. Picked it up on TWO for around £135 too :)

I'd definitely go for the Corsair 1000W with that rig. The 850 would run it but it could be at >80% load if the system was at full whack. Best to get a PSU with some headroom.

That must be a £2k PC you're building there. Don't skimp on the extra £50 for a better PSU - it's the most important component :)
