How quickly can you get carpets fitted?

We are going though buying our first house and one of the things on the list of to do's is recarpet all of upstairs and the staircase.

We are in a rental now and don't know when we are likely to exchange. That's means our financial position at that point and how much time we have to move in are unknown. We could have 1 day to move and no money, or we could have just under 2 months to move and plenty of spare cash, it just depends when the completion falls and how much notice we have.

Ideally if we have time we would like to do the decorating and carpets upstairs while the house is empty. How long does it take to go from deciding you want carpets fitted to getting them in? Having an idea on this would allow us to work out if we can get it done once we know when our completion date is.

All depends if they have the carpet in stock and how busy the fitters are, piece of string comes to mind but..

I had a stairs and landing carpet fitted the other week and it took 4 days from placing the order to getting it fitted.

The place I asked estimated 2 weeks before being able to do an upstairs bedroom and staircase and they are quite busy.

Ended up calling the next day to say he had a cancellation and could do it that afternoon  not that that helps you!

A week minimum usually. It depends on where you go, if they have the carpet in stock and if they have carpet fitters available on the date you want. They tend to be busier in the summer months.

A pair of fitters can carpet a 3 bed house in a day. This includes underlay and gripper and even vinyl in the bathroom if that gives you an idea of how long it will take.

I did something similar when I moved in, the answer is it doesn't take very long at all.

Carpet was purchased online and delivered to the new house, only took a couple of days (https://www.burts.co.uk/carpets/ass...ard-harvest-heathers-harvest-heathers-supreme) as did the underlay, door bars, grippers etc.

Find someone local to fit it for around £3 per sq m. They work very quickly so that doesn't take a lot of time. Many will work evenings or weekends as well. No doubt you'll have a week or so notice when you move in.

Cool, thanks guys. It sounds like if we have a few weeks then we should be able to get it done. Puts the pressure on me to get the painting done beforehand :)

Yes that's the priority. Also if you can rip off the skirting and architrave, new doors and radiators. Makes an incredible difference.

All depends on how much money we have once we complete. Currently it looks like less than nothing :p. But if things drag on for a few months we will be able to save some more.

How did you know how much to order? Did you calculate it yourself or get someone to do it?

I've had carpet fitted within 24 hours of purchase before. Buy from a carpet warehouse type place that actually have the carpets on display in big rolls e.g Franks or Storeys. Then get your local indie fitter to go and collect it and lay it.

Any time outside of Christmas and you should be able to have them fitted within days. There is a place up here that is a smaller carpet warehouse than Franks etc but still has plenty of good quality carpets in stock. I would buy cloud9 underlay online though, its much better and cheaper than the stuff they sell.

Took me just under two weeks to get two rooms carpeted. We took measurements into the shop, picked one out, they gave us a quote based on the numbers we'd given, a guy came round a few days later for an exact measurement, refunded what we'd overpaid based on actual measurements and a week later the fitters came.

This was just after Christmas so they said they were quite busy too. Apparently people buy carpets for Christmas

First and only time I'd had to do it and I was quite surprised how quickly and easily it was all sorted.

Summer and Christmas are house builders busiest times for completing houses. The last trade in is usually the carpet fitter and if the fitting is being done by a large company (like the one I sued to work for), they take on more fitters by paying them a bit more to meet demand hence why they are so busy.
Throughout May, June, July and November/December, we would take on an extra 5 teams to meet demand and we were in a small region just catering to a dozen Taylor Wimpey and Barratts sites.

I've ordered my underlay online and have just ordered some sample carpets from various places.

I'll get the carpet ordered soon after I've decided and then I best get ringing around for a carpet fitter.

Glad to hear the wait isn't normally too long.
