How reliable are VAC bans?

Hi folks,

Bit of an odd question. I'm running a CSS clan, and recently i've noticed one of our key members getting eratic shots now and then during clan wars. I've played the game for ages and to me, it looks like an aimbot.

I've dropped hints to the guy a few times and he gets a bit angry, so i leave it for a few weeks. But we had our first ED clan war a couple days ago, and we had to run XAC anti cheat. This member played really dire, having the lowest score in the match.

Turns out today he's been VAC banned for "suspected cheating". He tells me he's done nothing wrong but it all seems like a coincidence to me.

Are steam bans ever wrong? I'm probably going to give him the boot anyway :o

Cheers

VAC is a very reliable. It uses a delayed banning system - they collect a lot of information about the hack etc before they actually ban. THe ban could have resulted from any of the games you saw him behaving erratically etc.

Very realiable, a friend of mine has been banned twice for using aimbots

If he got vac banned, then steam would have detected him using a hack, so he was defiantely hacking to get banned.

vac is never wrong it might take a while till they find out you hacking and etc...

just tell your members to run xac in ed matches between whats your clan maybe play some match in ed :)

VaC bans are always 100%, but they only ban in batches every few months, TBH mate, i wouldn't trust him. Tell him where to go and move on before he ruinings the clans name.

BTW Steam Bans isn't VaC banned. Steam bans is a independant company - VaC is Valve - Steam bans is a server side plugin. Both are very very good at there job. I have done some work for steam banned.

I think there has been times that VAC has picked up wrong applications as hacks in the past but they are much better nowadays from what I gather(dont really play source games etc nowadays) as they do collect a lot of info etc and then ban, its a much better way of doing things, it also means valve bans a lot more cheats who have to go out and buy a new account, giving them more money to further invest in VAC.
If hes dire in wars with certain anticheat boot him anyway, hes a liability either way.

Isn't a VAC ban global to his account though?

Like he could have cheated at tf2, or dod or something and it would show up.

Not like it matters cheating bugger :]

The VAC ban will apply to any game that uses it as an anti-cheat.

VAC is completely accurate, if hes been banned, remove him. Also, it was never ever their brother or cousin or w/e it was them, don't believe their lies.

Yeah, it's engine specific. If you're banned for cheating on a source game you're then banned from playing any source game on a VAC protected server.
Likewise with the original HL engine and 1.6, TFC etc.

Thanks for the comments guys

I'll let you know what happens.

Well i spoke to him today.

He said he has been hacking, but about 4 months ago before the clan was formed.

He told me that if i honestly believed he cheats, then he'll leave. Which he just did.

Imo though, once a cheater, always a cheater.

Ah well :)

From what you posted, it certainly sounds like he was cheating.

However, a cheater isn't always a cheater.

My first online FPS that I played was mohaa. I used bright skins to see other people easier. Once I found out it was considered cheating, I removed them and have never done anything that could even be remotely considered cheating.
