How secure is Vista security...?

I am looking to buy Kaspersky Internet Security, but having been reading up on Vista, the in-built Firewall & Defender seem to have good reviews.
So, in theory, I just need the virus scanner - Why install more tools when they are there already?

I would appreciate it greatly if you guys could share your views on this matter!

I use Nod32.. no need to a diffrent firewall unless you have no router imo. If you dont have a router i would suggest looking at a firewall. Im not sure if comodo runs in vista but its seems to be the choice of firewall around here. But nod32 for antivirus. Kaspersky aint bad though.

No need for any type of third party protection yet (if there even is on XP). Vista is secure by default and is arguably the most secure OS you can use for desktop activities on an Internet connected machine.

I still use sygate personal firewall pro and turn off the windows firewall, simply because it makes access control easier.

are you saying that there's no need for anti-virus software at the moment? like with linux?

I'd be surprised if he is tbh. Just tried to install comodo but it doesn't like vista at all! I am, however, using avast for my AV. I don't quite trust MS Defender :p

Correct. UAC, protected-mode IE7, the two-way firewall, and other miscellanous low-level security enhancements provide all the protection you need.

Um...while you may have a point, I would still suggest using an AV as a method of defence for future threats. Nothing is 100% safe, ever.

Oh in the future, sure. But at the moment there's no 'rush' per se to get AV installed on Vista. I'd wait a few months till they iron out the bugs.

only thing i've needed Ad-Aware for is to remove tracking cookies so far

and they arent exactly ad ware. Just un-necessary :)

...yeah, good job on Vista for now - till people start finding the holes!
Thanks for all your input, guys, you've been a great help!

the point is with vista

that the only virus' you're going to get are ones you download yourself by downloading psp11crack.exe or whatever

the windows antivirus is never going to be able to keep up with all the virus' being released. If your after an antivirus that will bail you out when you download a virus, you're going to need AVG or NOD32 or whatever

but if you're not downloading it yourself, vista will keep you adequately protected.

Not so according to this report:

Vista Security Criticisms

Not surprised that McAfee didn't make the grade either, I never thought much of that program.
To be honest, AV software is the last line of defense... If the AV software has to come off the shelf then it means you've ******-up somewhere along the line. The last time I used AV was when I got infected with CIH (1998 IIRC?) from a PC Pro magazine CD. I felt guilty as hell whilst using it.

And this applies to all Windows, not just Vista.

It's not really surprising that OneCare is a heap of crap. It has a nice GUI and such but bad signatures. I honestly can't see Microsoft supporting this product by the time Vienna is here. Not because it's crap, but because Vista has already eradicated around 95% of the security problems Windows was suffering.

Just thought I'd point out that Windows Defender is Malware / Spyware scanner and not AV.

I do believe this is the most secure version of Windows out there at the moment - if you're careful you won't have problems (and don't turn off all the inbuilt security features like I normally do) :D

Yes there will be security holes - and they are only going to be found out due to the huge number of people who use it and attack it both internally and externally but again I think Microsoft has done very well with Windows Update and as soon as there is a problem there will be a fix for it.

I used Vista Ultimate x64 and still using Kaspersky I.S. 6 with MP2 for support Vista x86 and x64, it enabled both Windows Firewall and Kaspersky also Malware enabled both Windows Defender and Kasperksy - seem good software in Kaserpsky IS 6.0 - dont have problems at all. 64bits is slighty secured that x86 but there will be Vista SP1 this year to fix the patch.

I also used Spyware Doctor 4 anti-spyware and will get free upgrade to version 5 due in March.
