How slow is my CPU?

I just looked in my system information and it says this:

System Manufacturer MICRO-STAR INC.
System Model MS-6758
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~2666 Mhz

How much faster would a mid range dual core processor be, compared to my current setup? Just want a very rough idea.

Thanks,

Jon

The e6300 at stock would be around 80-100% faster in single core apps and up to 250-300% faster in programs properly configured for multiple cores. Then add to that the fact it will do 2.8ghz on almost any 965p based board it is a lot, lot faster.

I presume there are currently very few programs configured for optimal use with dual core, yes? In which case, I will only double the speed of my existing processor?

Can I use a dual core CPU on my existing motherboard, given my existing processor?

No as your current mobo is socket 478 for Northwood/Prescott Pentium 4s. The c2d socket is LGA775. You could however use a p4 with hyperthreading on that mobo giving two logical cpu's.

And even if your mobo was LGA775 it wouldn't support Core 2 Duo anyway. Not all LGA775 motherboards support all LGA775 processors, C2D in particular has a restricted selection that consists almost entirely of boards released just before, after or with it.
