how slow is updates from psn?

I think if you just cancel it and go to the GT TV section in game then you have a greater chance of the update suceeding. I'm not sure why. I have seen it written many times though!
 
Unfortunately you can only get it through the game. I like tons of others had the same sort of problem, I fixed it by going into the options menu in GT5P then it's the bottom left or right icon which allows you to change network settings and there's an option there you should change to be the same number as your NAT type.

When I did that the download went through next try, sorry that's ridiculously vague, I'll try and find which option it is.

ok no problem i have found that option now to find what number of nat i have?
 
That's pretty much standard, as far as I remember you can either have NAT1 (PS3 directly connected to broadband line), NAT2(PS3 connected to a router to the broadband line) or NAT3 which is the one you get network dropouts and problems.
