I'd say you're missing out on a little convenience and just something of a party trick with your bulbs, nothing else
I do like it though, we have Amazon Echos in the Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, Bedroom and Office. These are all used for music and general questions/adding to shopping lists/etc. When buying the extra Echos for other rooms I always did so when Amazon were offering a Hue bulb in the package, so started accumulating them slowly.
Now the office lamp is set to turn on just before sun set, which works well for my wife who is in there every day. Obviously in summer this is set not to happen as it isn't needed. The bedroom lamp turns on automatically when we go to bed after we tell Alexa to 'turn off downstairs', which switches off all of the lights that are on, currently the Christmas tree lights and the TV, and also sets the CCTV cameras to monitor for any motion, other than the dog.
When we say 'turn off downstairs' before we go to bed, Alexa replies by asking if we turned off the heating and locked the doors, something that used to happen a lot. When we buy a house later next year I want to add smart locks to the doors. This way I can just add the locks to the 'turn off downstairs' routine and they'll automatically lock. Also will have a smart thermostat to turn the heating down too.
The kitchen lights as you see in the video, are just triggered by a motion sensor, so we never need to flick a switch in the kitchen as they are plenty bright enough for cooking. At night they come on a little dimmer just to find your way to the fridge/kettle/etc.
I also set all the bulbs to turn off, apart from the living room lamp, when we leave the house. They turn back on when we arrive so we can see in the house. This is actually quite useful as annoyingly the switches aren't right by the door so you would have to fish around in the dark.
Obviously none of this is necessary for anyone, but it's quite cool and makes getting around the house at night a little easier. Also means I don't have to remember to switch off lights when we go to bed or out of the house.
