Hello.

I'm having some real problems with Eclipse at the mo.
I ran their speed test diagnostic over a period of days and got the following results.
Is it just me or is everyone else's internet just as tempremental ?

02/09/07 @ 6pm = 0kb/s
02/09/07 @ 8pm = 0kb/s
02/09/07 @ 10pm = 99kb/s
03/09/07 @ 4:30pm = 106kb/s
03/09/07 @ 8:30pm = 129kb/s
03/09/07 @ 10:30pm = 296kb/s
04/09/07 @ 5pm = 105kb/s
04/09/07 @ 7pm = 122kb/s
04/09/07 @ 11pm = 299kb/s
05/09/07 @ 4:30pm = 46kb/s
05/09/07 @ 8pm = 76kb/s
05/09/07 @ 9:30pm = 136kb/s

I know my hardware is not at fault as I have previously achieved speeds at over 700kb/s with Eclipse and my router.

They just seem to have dropped the ball recently. :(

(btw, I am about 774 meters away from my exchange in a straight line if that helps ? :))

Their speed test sounds like a load of crap if it's giving you 0kB/s, so I'd be inclined against trusting any of the results. Try a reliable test like one of the files from here.

Are you getting low speeds in some sort of real world test or is it just that tester?
Is the router disconnecting? Any errors? Do you know if Eclipse have shifted you onto an LLU service?
The usual stats (attenuation, SNR margin, sync rate, error counters if there are any) would be useful too.

my VM 4mb is so terrible and unstable, i get maxium download speeds of about 100-125kb/s in off peak times, otherwise its 30-40kb/s, slow internet, laggy online gaming most of the time, and poor customer support (Cant understand them on the phone)

Yeah that was when the connection went down completely and I couldn't even get to google :)

I just tried your link and I was getting about 190kilobytes per second.

As for your other questions.
I'm getting no disconnections or errors just a wildly fluctuating rate of download.
And I would tell you any of attenuation, SNR margin, sync rate values if I had any idea how :D

I know they can be good as I have witnessed it. I once got a 42mb file in under a minute. I just wondered if other people's internets are more stable than mine.

The sticky has links to sites with instructions, or post your router's make and model and someone's bound to know.
Forgot to mention, but try the BT Speedtest (again, instructions in sticky). It's possible it won't work though.

Im on Virgin 20mb, as long as im downloading from a good source I can usually guarentee il get at least 1500kb/sec which is acceptable in my eyes. This is at anytime of the day, I dont see any performance drops at peak times. As for downtime, ive probably had about 4 hours in total since it was installed 8 years ago so no complaints there.

Well im on eclipse and between 3pm and midnight it would slow down big time, im on a flext "unlimited" plan and so when i phoned they say the would "change the routing at the exchange" and since then no issues.

Might be worth a call to complain and see what they say?

i can tell you, mine is ******* awful. my average speed for the past 2 weeks has been ~20KB/s though that is with Sky, it should be around 50KB/s including the amount of times that i cant connect at all due to a poor phoneline it means that my average drops by 30KB/s

Seems good honest ISPs are far and few between nowadays.

Eclipse (taken over by Kingston Comms) has taken a serious nose-dive in performance. They actively throttle connections at all times. They secretely switch your connection to LLU if Tiscali come to your area, and if they can't do that they move you to Tiscali Datastream. They refuse requests to switch off interleaving.

The only reason I'm still with them is I can get 2mbits unlimited from their Giganews service, but that requires a static IP block, the use of iptables, and some configuration.

^norm, maybe look at using an enta reseller? ok you don't get newsgroups included but the connection and support is excellent. i pay 19.99 for 8mb - 30gb peak (8am-10pm weekdays) and 300gb off peak. no throttling based on protocol although admittedly when it does get busy they cut back speeds for everyone to prevent packet loss. this only happens after 10pm for an hour or 2 and also at the weekends in the afternoons.

loads of tech guys from both the resellers and enta themselves regularly post on adslguide's forums so you can see exactly what's going on and they will answer a lot of queries.

you can get a block of 8 ips for free and interleaving is a trivial matter. report it and it will be turned on/off the next working day.

a couple to look at (there are more)

www.ukfsn.org
www.adsl24.co.uk

and they run a monthly contract too so you're not tied in. you can leave with 30 days notice. :)

similar thing here, my upload is wierd too, a single connection can get up to 30KB/s, but as soon as i have 4 or more upload connections it just cuts everything off
