How the hell is this not 32?

Please explain to me how you thought I'm baiting you?

I'm always asking dumbass maths questions in GD, what makes you think you're special enough for me to single you out? Loads of helpful folks here.

As for the engineering stuff, this is my first 30 credits, so I'll take it (and truth be told I've skated by for this part like you would not believe, so to pass it with maybe 5% of the effort I should've put in is nothing to be scoffed at imo).
What is the qualification you get out of it at the end?
Maths is a massive part of engineering. Without it you're a technician/mechanic/brick counter.
You're in for a world of hurt if you ever get to 1st year uni level maths. But from the trend of your posts the course isn't going to take you far past GCSE...

It's this qualification.

I know engineering is very maths heavy, but a I said I've put in maybe 5% of the effort I should've in this part and my maths is rustier than a barn find Austin Princess (as you can tell). I've got some private tuition coming up to brush up on it and get it up to the level it needs to be at but at the moment I'm just panicking last minute. I dunno if you read this post but that's a large part of my maths being so weak (it shouldn't be an excuse, but it is, so I'm sticking to it :p)

Somebody should really show the OU how to spell 'chartered'.

I'm still struggling to see how can ever get 32, even if you do it in a completely different order.

edit:

I see, if you apply - instead of /.

Thanks, if I ever get a little twinge of guilt about berating your maths skills I can fall back on that.

You've won the career lottery for a low achiever because of where you live and the state of this country's financial / real estate system.

It feels like you are trying to justify it by stepping outside your educational comfort zone. An engineering degree isn't going to help you much in your current position.

If the degree is just for fun - fair enough but I'm sure you have better things to be doing with your time. If it's because the consultancy's are looking for it - don't waste your time with them the salary is not worth the effort.

Anyway the irony is that the world is upside down in the 21st Century - brickies get paid 10x the salary of 20 years ago, while the technically brilliant get a pittance, and both sides want a piece of the other's action.

Try imagining the division sign is actually a plus sign... hard I know.

For a brief moment this afternoon, right inbetween you thinking you were worth me singling you out and now, I thought you might actually be a reasonable person. This post just shows how naieve I can be.

Anyway.

Hi. I'm a foreigner. I have done very well for myself and have a bright future ahead of me. Thanks for your outstanding input. Ciao xxx

Hmm...perhaps they meant "Charioteered Engineer". In a bid to increase the number of engineers, they are providing a chariot and driver so engineers can travel in fine style.

Or perhaps not :)

EDIT: I'm old enough to predate this BODMAS/BIDMAS stuff. When I were a lad, it would have been written as (53/(3-20)) - 4. Although it would have been a division symbol rather than '/'.

I think that way is clearer because the brackets tell you the order of calculations very directly.

Wow even I got the right answer and I'm an official maths numpty. I have the lack of qualifications to prove it.

You baiting me @Diddums?

Ok I'll bite.

The question states the logic in which to follow to get the result. BODMAS - brackets, of, division, multiply, addition, subtraction.
(IDK what I is - 'in'? Doesnt matter, engineers can work out the missing pieces of a puzzle, right?)

Even with the mathematical logic spelled out for you in the same question, you cannot get it correct?

Honestly...

This

The I is Indexes, oh and the O is Orders not of :)

Then theres no point in stating the order of D and M, just call it BOAS...

Maybe, we weren't taught it in school. A police officer told it to me one day and it just stuck in my head.

I was only taught BODMAS/BIDMAS when I was in my 30's. I never touched on it at school.
I've said this time and time again, I'd never even heard of BODMAS (or whatever you want to call it) until two or three years ago. We were taught to do brackets first and then work from left to right.

It's weird, I dunno why it was pulled from so many curricula.
Same with foundation grammar at my primary school. Language teachers used to balk at our inability to label pronouns or tense types.

Why are you so mad/want to belittle others?

OP I would agree you need to get sound on the maths before the degree! I'm sure if you already work youre fairly covered from a practical point of view.

Luckily this forum solves most issues! I use it now for all my DIY questions :p
