How the sodding.... card details stolen.

I had a next directory book show up at my house and someone had made 3 purchases from them and halifax had blocked it, im self employed so always have cash and never use my card so not sure how they were able to do that either.

Sequential number scam.
I had this some time ago with Ulsterbank/NatWest they called to say they were stopping my card after 90p attempt was made on iTunes.
I made clear I had not lost my details.
They said they knew, sequential numbering scam, as there are some websites that still process without the 3 figures on the back, they run numbers with combos of expiry dates until they get a hit.

No doubt they've expanded over time to do the same and guess the three on the back also.

But surely there should be systems to stop that kind of brute force attack O_o

Thus they rang him at 5am to ask if he was using his card......
Yes, systems.

I think its more along the lines of they must have tried hundreds if not thousands of card numbers / expiries etc before one worked, surely such repeated failures would flag up and the endpoint should be banned.

Might be, but any successful hits along the way have to be investigated and either allowed or removed as fraudulent purchases, with stops on all the queried cards until cleared.
If they brute force massive amounts numbers, then they can and do get hits, either correct or incorrect.

Years ago I had my details stolen by a bent Dixons employee, who went on to buy £50 phone credits (Did it to a load of other people too) the Police asked me to make a statement, so I went to the Farnborough nick and did so, Afterward the Detective thanked me very much indeed.

Apparently I was the only victim who was prepared to lose half a days work to go in and make a statement for the sake of only £50.

Without me they would have had a rather harder time making a case (Apparently, though I find it hard to believe)

Cant really believe that so many people are so "Meh" about this:confused:

But then I am the sort of person who believes that identity thieves should get 6 month consecutive sentences for each offense and serve out their time in a North Korean forced labour camp.:p!

(I am sure we could do a suitable deal, post Brexit and all that! ;) )

ho humm
I think identity theft is one of the worst things that can happen, I've heard plenty of stories of how it's ruined credit ratings of many people who then can no longer get a mortgage because of it. Good on you for making a statement though, pleased that someone actually took the time to try and stop it from happening.

Just went onto my Halifax online account but I can't see my balance or anything just N/A on it atm, I guess they are doing some work.

Had card fraud twice now.

First was years ago on a card I had only had a matter of weeks and never used once. £1200's worth of cosmetics bought in Hong Kong. Card issuer was quick in dealing with it with no fuss.

Second is ongoing. Card weirdly used multiple times to register on datingdirect of all places! Interesting one to explain to the wife :D Card issuer has so far been hopeless.
  • First attempt I registered the fraud and received a call back 4 days later informing me that I had to go direct to Paypal to look into transactions. I wasn't questioning any Paypal transaction!
  • It then took 2 weeks after more phone calls to get the form sent out that I needed to complete.
  • When the form arrived they had again written down the wrong transactions.
  • I now have a letter stating they have requested details from datingdirect who have a month to respond.
No idea why it is taking so long, there is a block of repeated transactions to a site I am not registered on!

Can you not do a chargeback, cancel the card and get a new number? That way the debt gets piled on to whatever account was using the card (thats how most online services work).

Sorry to hear this, annoying and feels intrusive! Happened to my partner.

This is one of the reasons I use my Credit Card for almost everything, including PayPal and Amazon.

Gives me time to check my statement without ge cash going out, with the added benefit of interest being earned on capital.

This is referred to in police/court jargon as the 'loser statement' and many cases of theft or fraud have failed without them because it can't be proved that someone suffered an actual loss.

Because a replacement card isnt due for years :)

doesn't matter. my bank sends them out randomly sometimes.

e.g. i didn't need a new card for 2 years yet they sent me one. it could be due to something like new tech they are pushing (contactless) or they have had hundreds of customers phone up recently (more than normal) for card fraud and as a precaution they just do everyone to cover their bases.

in fact I would need to go back over a decade before i can remember a bank sending me a card as a replacement for one that was due to expire. i get new ones all the time well before expiry date sometimes years in advance.
