How to add extra security to this uPVC door - with pic!

I keep seeing a sort of lock on apartment doors on american tv programmes its like a bar going across the door in the middle and locks into either side of the frame. Any idea what on earth sort of door lock that is?

Fire exit style, have those in the UK too.

(off topic) Shop I was at in Shanghai last week chained the fire exit shut to stop people walking in that way at letting the airconed air out :(
 
The scum that break into houses are known to use a blow torch on the plastic to melt it, and the y bull out the plastic and bingo they are in.
 
We need arek to advise us on this. Where do we place the equalisers? :p

Talking about arek, why is he banned now? :( He did some funny stuff.
 
All sorted now guys, I have ordered some sash jammers. Then I cancelled that and ordered a mother flippin' drawbridge made of oak and virgins. This will be my last post for a while as demolition starts on my house this morning to accommodate the drawbridge! If anyone has any spare corpses send 'em my way I'll stick the heads on spikes and tear the bodies up to feed to the sharks I'm going to have in the moat!

I can't thank you guys enough! Unfortunately I will be flat broke after all this so won't be able to afford anything that is worth stealing :(
