How to apply thermal paste?

I put a tiny amount in the middle and spread it around the CPU cooler with a finger inside a plastic bag :D:D....just enough so i could still see the bare copper underneath.......... i then placed it on CPU and wiggled it around from left to right...it works fine now.....third time lucky!
