how to avoid getting stuck in snow?

If you're worried it's going to be *that* bad, get snow chains. They are seriously brilliant.

To the nay-sayers, I've been driving around the hilly bits of Windermere, Bowness and Kendal in the Alfa, on somewhat wide tyres, It's not bad as snow goes, plenty of grip.

NE Lakes will he harder, but not impossible. Although judging by the news, getting past Burton services on the M6 will be harder.

From this thread, i am taking away; carpet / mats. cheers.
Take some rope as well, and tie the carpets to your rear tow hook so once you are moving you don't have to stop to pick up the mats and possibly get stuck again!

This sounds like a really bad idea.. Rent a 4x4, or as lopez said, acquire snow chains. I doubt very much that you'll be able to navigate the remote points of the lakes at the moment.

A FWD with skinny tyres is probably the best thing to be driving other than a 4x4.

I'd perhaps take a shovel, some spare car mats, a torch and a tinfoil blanket and warm clothes in case you get stuck.
The one time I used car mats they just melted, rubber ones obviously.

Don't go.
Get a train?
If you have to use your Fiat, it should be ok but with hills you just need to take a run up and use as high a gear as you can.

"This cheap alternative to snowchains or to winter tyres is staggeringly easy to fit... I used them while driving in the French Alps last week and can confirm they are absolutely superb."
I wonder what the French Police would say if they were to catch you using a set of these

I think I'll continue to rely on my ancient Rapid Matic V3s :)
