I want to format my pc but there are some emails i dont want to lose. is there a folder where they are all kept or do i have to save each one as a file separatly?

Copy all emails from hotmail to your inbox (just to make sure)

Then copy...

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxxxxxxxx}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Copy this directory to your backup drive. Export all IAF email settings to backup directory.
When you've done a fresh install open OE, import your IAF email settings. Quit. Copy the files overwriting existing files. Open OE and they're there. :-)

Done it loads of times, restored all emails fine.

Hi, you can backup your emails in outlook express by the following method:

Go Tools, Options
click the maintenance tab
click store folder
copy the location you see in the box making sure you highlight all until you see outlook express at the end of the line
click OK
paste this into the run box in start menu and the folders will come up, then copy these to another location.

To copy back to outlook, do the following:

click File, Import, Messages
select microsoft outlook express 6, click next
tick import mail from an OE6 store directory, Ok
Then browse to the folder where they are stored, click next and select all folders.

Note sometimes you can't install from a CD location as they don't get recognised, so copy to the HD.

Hope this helps/

all this seems like a lot of work when theres a windows tool which does this for you, im not on a windows machine right now but its called something like 'file and settings transfer tool', its one of the programs which is on the start menu on a fresh install, anyway it does this not just for OE but for almost everything.
