How to backup iPod to new computer?

I'm slightly confused with this whole itunes thing since I last used it was a nan years ago.

My girlfriend has an old ipod 160gb but I've reinstalled xp on her netbook and apparently if it syncs it will wipe the ipod.

Is there a simple free way to do this?

Yeah an iPod is meant to sync with iTunes, so you use iTunes to tell it what music to put on the ipod.

Does the iPod hold the only copy of all the music? You're meant to put the music on the computer first.

I'm not sure if you can plug the iPod in, then access it like a usb drive and drag the music off, Google will know.

You can't sync it to anything without losing what you have on it they are designed to be a copy of your iTunes, and only urs so u can't copy or people music on other devices
