How to check if flights are grounded?

One of my engineers is due to be back at work today from leave. He's texted us last night saying that he won't be back until Wednesday as flights from the canaries are grounded. I've checked a few sites but can't find anything confirming this. Before I jump the gun and drag him over the coals for it, is there a site you guys know about which may have more information?

He contacted a colleague rather than myself so I can't ask him for flight numbers or what airline he's on.

Cheers :)

Just check the departures info of the airport he is flying from. If flights are grounded it will be clearly evident.

Well a Google search gives a list of airports for the Canary Islands and looking those up on Flightradar24 doesn't seem to show any issues. But without knowing the airline (who you can check with) it's hard to say.

Why would you lie about something that can be so easily checked. Out of a million excuses he chooses this one :p

Are you his line manager?

If so, why hasn't he contacted you, instead of a colleague? I would be wary of dealing with second hand information.

Worth checking historical info - could be a past flight that was grounded causing forward disruption. Even if flights have resumed some passengers might still be delayed.

There's a lot of history here. The TL;Dr is that he worked for this firm for a year longer than me. 7 weeks after joining this firm they promoted me to lead engineer and he's had a massive chip on his shoulder about it since, hence why he never tells me anything. Unfortunately others further up the chain of command don't care so nothing gets done about it. This is simplifying it considerably but that's what it boils down to essentially.

This is also why I don't want to jump the gun. I'm 99% sure he's talking out his arse as he always is but need to give him the benefit of the doubt before kicking up a fuss.

Report him for unauthorised absence if the guidelines state he should be talking to you.

I'm not even allowed to text or email my manager anymore it must be a phone call, nevermind leaving it to someone else to tell him.

Sadly that's above my pay grade. The problem is that I have to work with this guy on a daily basis and he's the worst person I've ever worked with in 16 years of this industry. Always late, calling in sick, extremely unproductive, always dragging heels and often interrupting others to help him do silly things, etc. Basically a pain in the arse.

I've given up on him tbh, I just let him do his own thing as it's simply not worth the frustration any more and those who have the power to address it simply don't care, so meh. At the end of the day my figures look good and my targets are met and that's all that matters to me.

EDIT: Upate: it seems he's talking about some tiny little dinky airport which flies domestic flights between the islands. He's had to take a boat or something. I dunno. I'll see when he gets back.

Well fuerteventura to Lanzarote takes about 30 minutes by boat so even that seems odd to be 2 whole days late...

Is it more likely he didn't have enough holiday days left and just wanted a longer holiday?

Likewise - I can inform a colleague to tell a manager but expected to follow it up as soon as possible by talking to a manager directly otherwise unauthorised absence.

This is someone who plays the system extremely well, although he was forced to take holdiays at the end of last year he still does everything which involves giving him a lieu day (call outs on bank holidays mainly).

He's also unioned up to the hilt and a dyed in the wool lefty (the stupid arrogant kind, not the open minded kind), to give you an idea of what I'm working with. He's a rotten one to the core.

The unfortunate truth with this type of person is that it is often not worth pursuing any actions. They are experts at manipulating the situation to their favour and will somehow find a way to make you out as the bad guy while they are the poor victim. It sucks but sometimes you have to be discerning in the battles you fight.

Exactly, which is why I'm not bothered with him any more. I've barked up that tree long enough to know nothing's going to change. I was still curious to find out if he's lying to us yet again, seems to be the case.
