How to check old HDD?

I have an old HDD that has a legit copy of windows xp on it. I have the install disc but lost my product key and the only way to get it is to load of xp on the HDD. Can I just hook the HDD up to my PC and load it up?

The PC this HDD is installed on is broke, the motherboard is fried. I just need to get access to the product key on this drive.
