How to clean cpu?

Got some thermal paste today and i am going to put it on but first how do i clean the existing paste of the cpu i have turps (white sprit) or some cd cleaner i could use but i dont know if either will damage it ?

I wouldn't use turps, it may leave a residue on the base of the cooler. If you've got it use meths instead. Best stuff to use is isopropyl alcohol, you can buy it from most good pharmacies.

The cd cleaner, check if it contains isopropyl alcohol. If so id use this, its what ive used for ages to clean cpu's/heatsink bases. As said turps leaves an oily residue on any surface its used on.

Ok found the cd cleaner but it has no lable on it, so will i get the most of it of then use some cotton buds with cd cleaner on them?

lighter fluid will work fine, or methylated spirits (purple one)

Definitely Isopropyl alcohol, neat is better and can be purchased from a chemist.

isopropyl alcohol is the only way to go - plus its cheap in local pharmacies as stated above.
